Oliver Nelson  Stolen Moments
Dexter Gordon  Tanya

Comment:

Well, I would never argue that any music was the best music. But, if someone held a gun to my head and insisted, this mix would be my argument for jazz as the best music. All tracks are from the 50's and 60's (jazz lovers please correct me on this), very heavy on the brass, and all imo sublimely fantastic.1)Man From Monterey - so extremely hip it should have been played all up and down the Las Vegas strip through loud speakers every time the Rat Pack pulled into town.2)Wade in the Water - a swinging' 60's jazz feel.3) thru 6) all great with Stolen Moments as a personal favorite7) Tanya: 18 mintues of pure groove, with the trumpet coming into the song like a raptor coming into a room in that dinosaur movie. Play this song LOUD!8)So What - a masterpiece on an album that probably everyone owns already.9)My Favorite Things - my personal favorite of any jazz song. Maybe of any song, period. This is the melodic, ethereal version, rather than the more avante-garde, modern sounding one.Pop it into the car and head to Vegas. Enjoy!

Very nice. One question, though: where's that version of "My Favorite Things" from? I'm not sure whether your comment is indicating that it's the studio version as opposed to one of the later live versions, or if there's an pre-1960 version of that song I'm not aware of.

Great stuff Steve. A brilliant first jazz mix from you. If I was making a very best ever jazz mix, just about everything on here would be considered. Well done.

Ben - after looking at all 300 or so of the Coltrane listings on Amazon, it appears that the more frenetic, modern-sounding version I had on vinyl in the 70's was one of the live versions. I was amazed to see that there are 5 versions alone on the 7 Cd European Tour Box set (sadly, I don't own it). The version here is the standard great one from the Oct 1960 recording sessions for the album My Favorite Things. I could not detect any other studio version. That would be nice, eh?

My knowledge of jazz doesn't go a whole lot deeper than "Kind of Blue" (though I like Thelonious Monk a lot- "Monk & Coltrane" Rules!-). I'm gonna have to check out these songs.

Nice picks! My taste in jazz is almost exclusively centered on the '50s and '60s period, so I'm sure I would enjoy listening to this.
