Comment:

He may have found fame with pop and R&B, but ever since his early days as Lionel Hampton's trumpeter, Quincy Jones has always been a jazzman at heart. His orchestration spun a silky web of wonder around siren Sarah Vaughan's celestial tones on "The Midnight Sun Will Never Set." He was on hand to guide Miles Davis through his last-ever album, Miles & Quincy Live at Montreux, filling the football-stadium-sized shoes of late conductor/arranger Gil Evans on a marvelously moody swing through "Summertime." And he even led Count Basie's band behind Sinatra on "I've Got You Under My Skin" at the Sands — now that's when you know you've reached a lofty perch.
