Comment:
The first in what will probably be a two-volume series celebrating my newest musical obsession (of sorts). Thanks to Rich Henderson for finally converting me to Mr. Hannon's charms. The second volume will feature a lot of his excellent covers, as I didn't feel like including them on this initial primer. Last songs cut: "Commuter Love", "Generation Sex", "National Express", "Something for the Weekend", "Bernice Bobs Her Hair" and "Middle-Class Heroes". (FYI: I cheated by posting this mix at this point, as I still do not have a functional burner.)Feedback:
I love this! I love The Divine Comedy, and I'm glad you got into them. You've got most of my favorites on this.
Lovely lovely. Neil Hannon has remained pretty obscure here in the States, which is unfortunate, since the Divine Comedy has been one of the most consistently excellent bands out of the UK in the last 10 years. In a word, this mix is...uh...ahem...divine.
Dammit, someone beat me to referring to this as "divine". Oh well. Quite nice.
I love the songs i know, however this is a band that i really want to get to know better. Looks good.
Can't believe you cut National Express though, that is such a good song! The ones on the mix though are great, especially The Pop Singer's Fear! Good one :)
but i think 'something for the weekend' really catches the smarminess of the popsinger.. :) i'm missin' it rob!
It's great to see a single artist mix for this band- you included my favourite, favourite song by them (alfie) but I do have to say that I miss 'something for the weekend' too...
bernice bobs her hair, sorry it didn't make it,
great song,
greater story,
great song,
greater story,
I don't know anything about this band. I'm intrigued!
You'll get a copy the week after my computer is fixed. :-)
i found a cover of "there is a light that never goes out"-its good, real good
Great mix. Have you heard "Happy Goth"? It's possibly my favorite.
Hey, I tried converting you last year! If only we could have done that trade. Anyhow, this actually looks quite similar to my own "Smile While Your Head Explodes" compilation (though mine is more of a straightforward singles compilation for the uninitiated). You have a great selection of b-sides here and have pretty much included all of my favorite ones ("Get Me To A Monastery" is a top ten TDC song for me, hands down). Have to say, though, that I find "The Summerhouse" laborious and overrated, and "A Short Album About Love" a little too slight for my tastes (though the live sound is interesting). I've seen Neil live twice now, by the way.
Oh, I also greatly prefer the "Liberation" version of "Timewatching."
"Monastery" is my favorite Divine Comedy song, Vinz. Interesting that you don't like "Short Album" much... it's definitely my favorite and definitely the most like Scott Walker (you mentioned that you were curious about Scott). And as much as I like Liberation (it's my second-favorite album of his, followed by Promenade & Casanova), there's no way that I'd prefer its version of "Timewatching" to the live version on this disc.
Wow..."Monastery" is your fave! That's awesome. I thought I was virtually alone in my overwhelming adoration for that b-side. Not sure it'd be my #1, though, but damn close. I usually say my #1 is "Don't Look Down," oddly enough. As for fave album, I've changed my mind several times in the last few years, but currently it's "Promenade" (which is also the one that took me the longest to get into).
"London Irish" and "Get Me To A Monastery" are definately two of the best b-sides. Very nice. :)
