Comment:

Nick Lowe is one of those perennial rock & roll survivors who has belted out a fair number of true classics but has generally operated just below the mainstream radar screen. Though he's crossed a fair number of genres -- CSNY-inspired Americana and pub-rock r&b with Brinsley Schwarz, and later a range of rock, rockabilly, and blue-eyed soul on his own and with various side-outfits -- for my money he peaked with the incredible pop on his solo debut, the aptly-titled Pure Pop For Now People (a.k.a The Jesus Of Cool in the UK, where they apparently have fewer hang-ups about hip blasphemy). How can you not love a guy who got out of his record contract to begin a solo career by recording nothing but odes to the Bay City Rollers, until his label had no choice but to let him go? (Only one of those is included here, don't worry.) Many thanks to Sean Lally for sharing his similar mix with me; nonetheless, unlike Sean, I'm less a fan of Lowe's later, more mature work, opting instead for a heftier chunk of tunes from his early Brinsley Schwarz days.

Awesome. I love the early stuff too, of course. But I maintain that the last two records contain some of his finest moments as a songwriter. This seems like an excellent companion to my mix. Really great comp.

This looks great and I'd love a copy. I'm with Sean on appreciating the newest stuff (I think The Convincer may be my favorite album of his, start-to-finish), but your selections from his early period can't be faulted.

Absolutely fantastic. Early stuff, late stuff, it's all great, and this does his genius justice.

Great mix! Nick Lowe is a suitable candidate for the Single Artist mix -- he has compiled an awesome body of work.
