Comment:
This tape represents my admittedly inconsequential and frivolous reaction to GW's announcement of impending war on Monday evening. My emotional response was an unexpectedly complex one, ranging from utter disgust, to fear, to a need for simple escape. I think that entanglement of emotions is fairly well depicted by the song selection; from outrage (Clash, PE, Dylan, etc.), to the nonsensical (Malkmus, Kirk, etc.), to a yearning for escape either pastoral (Toots) or of a more visceral nature (King Curtis), or that sense I think we get at such times that all we have is those we love (JB, Costello). I was moved to a rare pride when my own (Cdn) Prime Minister broke away from the US and indicated that we would not be involved in any action unsanctioned by the UN, but somehow that feels like a terribly small consolation. People will die by the scores, or hundreds, or most likely by the thousands. I'll still go to work, I'll still listen to my CDs, I'll still shop for goat cheese and sun-dried tomatoes at my local mega-grocery store. Does anyone else feel powerless here? I don't know. I guess the interceding 36 hours have done nothing to alleviate my confusion. Whatever. Fuck war.Feedback:
I should add that the title comes from an essay of same name by Henry Miller which addressed the outbreak of hostilities in WW2. The cover of this tape features a drawing of President Bush. The ambiguity of the title in relation to events is entirely intentional.
Love the AOL track and your comments ... you buy goat cheese..mmmcreamy!
very well put together mix. nice clash, dylan, NMH, PE and richman covers, among others.
