Comment:
Let's finally admit it -- THE TURTLES WERE BETTER THAN THE BEATLES! Ok, no, just trying to get your attention. But, nonetheless, they are sadly overlooked among hip circles for their contributions to the 60's pantheon. Though they started out as a pale Byrds imitation, workmanlike Dylan covers and forgettable surf-infused pop, they nonetheless belted out a surprising wealth of memorable pop nuggets. Songs like "Happy Together" and "Elenore," for all their oldies-format overplay, are, face it, pretty damn great. And their later albums (from which most of these selections are drawn), while still never straying from the 2-minute pop-song format and failing to capture the musical and lyrical sophistication of their peers, did show some signs of real maturity, most notably on the Ray Davies-produced Turtle Soup. And unlike many acts of the late 60's, they had a great sense of humor, seen most clearly on the joyful Battle Of The Bands, where they pose as 12 different bands playing tongue-in-cheek tunes in widely divergent styles. The unlikely pop stars at the center of the band, the oversized and unattractive Volman/Kaylan team, went on to add their backing vocal talents to everyone from Zappa to T. Rex (alas, their own albums under the name Flo & Eddie are largely out of print).
Feedback:
gee i think this mix is swell.
very nice.
very nice.
I really like this! It's unfortunate that it's so difficult to find the Flo & Eddie stuff coz I thought that was cool as well.
Excellent stuff! If you're so inclined, look at the Turtle mix I did a while back...
This looks great.
