Comment:
From his very first verse, 2Pac radiated pure charisma — the sonic equivalent of a Hollywood actor who gets the big break on his first audition. Come to think of it, he was only a teenager when Digital Underground, then at the peak of their post-"Humpty Dance" success, initiated the young MC into their psychedelic crew. With his memorable appearance on the group's "Same Song," the high-top-faded backup dancer displayed a razor-sharp tongue and desire to stay true. And while he later wore the West on his back, he readily stepped across regional divides, stealing the show on "Smile," the 1997 hit from gravel-voiced Houston legend Scarface. Boasting of closed-captioned cinematic lifestyles and fatal attractions, the man with the military mind state chillingly attested to his addiction to the fast life — the life that, ultimately, led to his demise. Of course, the details were there in "Thug Luv," where his cannon ball-boom baritone scars alongside the light-speed, tongue-twisting raps of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony — not to mention the sounds of automatic weapons being loaded. But then again, you'd be hard-pressed to find a lackluster 2Pac collaboration, including neck-snappin' turns on tracks with Nas, the Notorious B.I.G., Bun B, Spice 1, and more.
