How very often our greatest poets have contemplated upon the quiddity, the essential whatness of Tuesday! Well, not really. Actually, there is only one recorded instance of this ever happening at all, when John Milton spent an afternoon thinking quite seriously of a number of neo-Latin hendecasyllabics on the spirit of Tuesday. But then his wife asked him to take out the garbage and he forgot about it entirely. We almost lost Aeropagitica the same way, but this is by the bye.

What is Tuesday that we are mindful of it? We all know what Tuesday feels like, but to say what Tuesday is is to carry water on a knife's edge. Tuesday has no color, no shape, no texture, yet who will not claim to know Tuesday as well as the back of his hand? Well, I won't, but then I'm very sensitive on such issues. You can't go by me.

As this sampling of songs demonstrates so well, Tuesday's peculiarity lies in its not being any other day at all. It is a part of us which is yet foreign to us. When we think on Tuesday's essence, we alienate our own thoughts in that way Russian novelists are always going on and on about. To know Tuesday is to experience a very special Zeitgeist, to listen to and to heed that certain middle voice which whispers to us so unceasingly, "Hadn't you better get something for lunch?"
