cognition.1
Comment:
6/05 - Series remastered via Roxio Media editorMore an atmospheric collective than anything else, Cognition, [parts I, II, III & IV], exists as an ambient metric; a measurement of movement; from here to here (which can be, in fact, quite a significant journey).
Cerebrally explorative (and introspective).one can sit motionless, with this on headphones, and travel to the depths of the
mind and back (still working out the frequent-flyer mileage details).
Part of the project's overall objective was to create an
audiological prosthesis: with sounds that, in series, create similar, yet different, landscapes to be used for computing, late night web surfing, amorous interludes, and that all time favorite pastime of mine.Sunday afternoon
napping!...truly a multi-functional, auditory tool
(an ambient Swiss Army Knife, if you will).
Sound-scape progression:
Disc 1: ambient-microsound;
Disc 2: ambient-experimental;
Disc 3: ambient-ambient;
Disc 4: ambient-classical;
soft synths, some strings, bent fluctuations & a few wildcards tossed in (just to keep it edgy).
...as a sidebar project for this series, I sent out e-mails to 10 of the more obscure artists appearing herein.just to see what kind of response I'd get: 9 out of the 10 sent replies (some obligatory, others engaging), & their responses will be scattered throughout the comments section(s), depending on which disc they appear.
I recently ran across an interesting quotation, whilst surfing, on the Hypnos web site:
"You will never grasp the Universe, no matter how great your effort; but if you relax your will,
the invisible truth will settle, weightless, in your palm."
Credits: thanks to: Muzag, Curtis Burns, Blackadder, valis, lo-fi, jr., carbomb, & Junior D for their musical contributions (which they will recognize, herein, 1 ~ 4);
...it's been a blast !
~ :-p

Reads as a great travelogue inward g.a.b. lab'er!
(The quote reminds me of a line from Kafka.....)So many outstanding pieces/soundscapes in this set....

Thanks for the kind words. That's what keeps me going. There isn't much
money in this genera of music, so the positive words are what I'm in it
for. Thanks. Ipperwash Twilight is a very special track for me.
My grandparents lived in a small house at ipperwash beach in Ontario
Canada, and one day I drove over to their old place and made some
recordings with a portable DAT machine. Those recordings are in that
song. I set up mics on the back porch of the old house, and let the
tape roll. There are big pine trees with wind blowing through them, and
insects in the swamp next to the house. I love that one because I hear
that place in the background.
Thanks again Gene, and take care,
Rod

> I've been enjoying your composition "Straight Lines."
> It's aptly titled in that it sounds like a "straight line" of
> bent sound with a massive sound wall behind it.
The piece suggested the title. The working name was "A Minor Piece",
since it consists of alterations, inversions & extensions of an A minor chord.
Straight Lines came about when I made a simple diagram for the mix & it consisted of, you guessed it, straight lines.
> It is a welcome addition to my ever growing Ambient/Microsound
>music collection.
Thank you very much for the comments. It's always great to hear how a piece
goes over with listeners, but very rare with a recorded piece where there's
no immediate feedback from a live audience. I appreciate your taking the time
to listen & respond & hope Hypnos keeps putting out great ambient music.
Take care,
Scott Fraser

WOW!
Yep, WOW! indeed. Looks like a great project, Gene.Nice write up on the set too; I like the idea of contacting the artists involved (and to get positive feedback from them).
Truly ambitious ambient ! !

Gary...it was sorta' neat, watching the e-mailbox for replies from the artists themselves...they trickled in over a 2 week period. This is probably my last project for @ least this year & I wanted to make it a li'l bit "special."
valis: was this the quote?
"You do not need to leave your room. Remain sitting at your table and listen. Do not even listen, simply wait, be quiet still and solitary. The world will freely offer itself to you to be unmasked, it has no choice, it will roll in ecstasy at your feet."

g.a.b., I think you put as much work into your writeups as you do into your mixes. Fabulous selections, as always, and I'm glad I could help contribute in a small way. Your credits are appreciated.
Sorry to hear that this may be your last mix for a while. I "tune in" to AotM mainly to see what you are up to. As always, you have given me a long list of new artists to check out, including many that I wouldn't have even considered when doing an ambient mix.

I have to say I saw this several days ago when first posted but I was stunned into silence and am just now recovering.
Only one mixer I know can take yo yo ma, takemitsu and king crimson and make it work. always fine art, whether it's the music or the liner images. g.a.b. on.

i think I really want this serie if it's possible
g.a.b.---- that was indeed the quote...., exactly. (One of my favorites. Presages the morphogenics field by quite some time....)
WTF! Somehow I missed this entire series. Glorious. All of it.
A masterpiece series.
