Comment:

80 minutes of the various permutations of my favorite E6-related band (its only competition, really, is Neutral Milk Hotel), clearly inspired by zachrobbins' similar mix from last week. And Zach was right: despite the fact that I was only working from four full-length albums and an e.p. here (I've got all the singles, as well, by each project, but didn't really consider any of the uncollected tracks to be better than those represented here, plus I wound up discarding the idea of using Michael Barrett's phenomenal solo album, Couches and Carpet, due to the surplus of great material), I had a very hard time compiling this. (As a result, I cheated a bit and edited "Tinker" approximately 15-20 seconds after the vocals stop.) Last songs cut: "The Boo Hoo Boy", "Lovely Day", "The Ballad of a Sometimes Traveller", "Trouble" and "Twisted". By the way, Everything is Green is easily one of my ten favorite albums of the past ten years.

"last in line" is the only thing i dont see, btw, what think you of the new one-live it takes on a garage-psychadelia that is kinda missed on the recording in my opin

Interesting. I don't know any of this stuff and it's BETTER than NMH? That's awefully high praise. Well, hopefully I'll get a chance to hear it sometime!

I only know some of the Essex Green stuff, but with what I'm familiar with, you've made great choices. I'm not sure if that sentence makes sense; I just woke up.

I've got one of the Essex Green albums, and, while I like the Zombies-like sound, I've found it a bit less durable than most of the E6 scene. Not familiar with SGL (I assume that's different from the Great Lakes, but it's hard to tell these days). If we ever get around to trading, maybe I'll check this out and give 'em another shot.

The Sixth Great Lake and Great Lakes are indeed two different bands. It's interesting that you mentioned Great Lakes, though, as their debut album is my *other* favorite E6 album (besides Everything is Green and In the Aeroplane Over the Sea). And yeah, I'll be happy to trade this CD once: 1) I actually have a burner to use; and 2) I finish "making good" on all of my past trades (which were behind even before my Media Player stopped recognizing CDs two months ago).

To Nate: To say that this is "better" than NMH might be a stretch. These folks are more "retro" and less possessed than Mangum & Co., but I like them about as much.

I like that Essex Green record quite a bit also. The Barrett album never hit me that well, though. Sixth great lake is cool, too. Good picks here.

Great band, in all its incarnations... I'm surprised you didn't include any Ladybug Transistor at all, even though I agree it not the best of their stuff... I'd never have cut Tinker short, since that's my favorite track (including in it wonderful entirety on my "You Sure Picked a Winner (Revisited)" mix... which transitions nicely into O'Rourke's "Get a Room"). I like this band a lot, same goes for NMH and Great Lakes (just got that album REALLY recently)... but in my mind, no E6 band beats the Minders.

By the way, they're not exactly a part of E6 (even though Robert Schneider mixed the album), has anyone else picked up on the Galactic Heroes? I'm in love with their album "How About San Francisco" and surprised they haven't shown up on the site more often already.

Rob...as an olive branch to end our feuds of the past I was wondering if I might be able to help in some way with your burner troubles. Is it simply a software issue or is it an actual defective burner? I know quite a bit about getting these things working so maybe I could be of some help. You mentioned that Media Player doesn't recognize CD's which makes me think it might be a software issue.

Looks good, Rob. I'd like to hear this someday, as I'm only familiar with the Essex Green. What ever happened to that email you promised me, like months ago? :)

Hey Geoff--thanks for the offer. My computer is actually still under warranty from the place that I bought it, so after two months of stalling (which had a lot to do with the fact that I not only got a new job, as you know, but also formally moved in with my girlfriend), I finally called them last week and got the exact diagnosis that you mentioned (and that I kind of already knew). So they sent me a box via FedEx and I'll be sending it off tomorrow. The external burner that I have actually works just fine, but the Media Player is shot. I honestly do appreciate your offer, though. Sue: Yeah, you're right... it's coming soon, I promise. Patrick: Yeah, they're not "formally" part of E6, although the E6 imprint was on their first e.p. I didn't include Ladybug Transistor tracks because I view that as being primarily Gary Olson and Jennifer Baron's baby. They may get a separate mix on their own, as "Albermarle Sound" is a real favorite of mine. As far as the Minders go, I *really* love their singles comp and the first album, but am not so fond of the Down in Fall e.p. or the last album (although I haven't traded any of their stuff).

Agreed, the first two Minders releases do outshine the rest by far.

Media player is just software...why don't you just uninstall it and download the new version?

Actually, I meant to correct what my message said. It's a hardware problem--i.e., something in the mechanism of the player is faulty--so they're going to replace it. I can't reinstall any programs because the Media Player will not recognize software CD's, either.

Btw, one more correction: by "Media Player" (although that is indeed the software that I have) I meant CD-Rom drive. (I'm *not* particularly knowledgable about anything computer-related, I admit).

Ahhh....I see. I was worried for a minute there!
Too bad you have to send the whole system back, for $25 bucks or so you could buy a new CD-rom and install it...it's dead simple.

The first time I heard of these folks was about a month ago when my friend tony skipped a prty of mine to go see some group called Essex Green his old band toured with. So funny, because I feel like I see their name everywhere now. Glad to know they are at least good. rob, I'd by psyched and honored to trade you my mix with the whiskeytown cover. It's difficult to choose from your crazy catalog, but I do like your Redd Kross one... That seems like such an unadventurous choice though.

Hey, nothing wrong with Redd Kross, Ruby. More people should be interested in them...
