Comment:

(Total Time: 1:06:06) In "God's Comic: A Critical Companion to the Lyrics of Elvis Costello" (yes, there is such a book) Dave Gouldstone says that he doesn't like the album "Blood and Chocolate" because it's just more of the same thing. Whatever. Then I listened to the CD and realized that in a way he was right: the Bonus Disc (of the recent Rhino edition) really adds to the original album--and the same goes for "All This Useless Beauty". So I made a mix of alternate versions of album songs and extras not included in the original Columbia pressings, but added in the Rykodisc and Rhino series. Missing (sadly) are "Punch The Clock" (Rykodisc) which was eaten by my possessed seven-disc-changer and "Armed Forces" (Rhino) which will be the next addition to my collection. "Goodbye Cruel World" (Columbia) is a sin of omission. Putting these songs in a new context gives them a life of their own. There are country-inspired tunes (two songs were written for Johnny Cash, though he only recorded one of them--"Hidden Shame") and lots of bluesy stuff (check out "Pouring Water on A Drowning Man"). My big "find" from putting this mix together is "That Day is Done" (with the Fairfield Four) which was co-written with Paul McCartney. I hardly gave it a listen before--and it's awesome. "Days" is a Ray Davies cover, "Night Time" is a cover of a Smokey Robinson and the Miracles original, and Mick Jones plays on "Big Tears".

Bizarre! In a way, this is like an alternate "Taking Liberties" or "Out Of Our Idiot." I own that Gouldstone book, and while I find it an enjoyable read and have probably read it a dozen times over, I don't completely agree with him in spots. "Blood And Chocolate" is easily one of my top three or four Costello records, PERIOD. Oh, and as for "Goodbye Cruel World" being a sin of omission...you are hereby relieved from guilt, as it's a pretty miserable record.

By the way, I think the line is "there's a shortHAND typist taking seconds over minutes."
