Comment:
For those out there who thought that ,Bastard Pop" or ,bootlegging" (a term which, in the good ol' days of the 60s, 70s and 80s, stood for illegally recording a live concert and putting it out on tape or record and today means mixing the vocal track of one song with the playback of another; also see Ion Moe's excellent ,Introduction to Bastard Pop" on this here site) was a recent phenomenon, I have two words: learn otherwise. It all started in 1981, when Flash released his ground-breaking ,Adventures of Grandmaster", very probably the first record to make use of the sampling technique (albeit in a fully analog way, i.e. he physically mixed various records, working on three turntables, real-time, and then edited the whole thing on a 4-track, `cos unfortunately, they didn't have samplers or PCs in those days), creating something totally new, original and formerly unheard-of from ,old" material. When Matt Black and Jonathan More aka Coldcut's ,Say Kids, What Time is It?" (taking its title from the theme song of ,The Howdy Doody Show") and, even more so, the brilliant ,Beats + Pieces" came out in early 1987, the dam broke and myriads of similar records (and remixes) followed, most notably maybe M/A/R/R/S's ,Pump up the Volume" (in turn sampling Coldcut) which, although using the same production techniques as hip hop, basically marked the advent of House music and created the Hip House style which was fashionable for about six months in 1988 (and lead to a mass of mediocre rip-off discs by rightfully long-forgotten artistes such as S-Express, The Beat Pirate, Code 61, Chilli & the Groove Gangsters, Twin Beat, Capella etc). The mighty Coldcut went on to establish their own label Ninja Tune which has gladdened and delighted us with their unrelenting output of excellent records for over ten years. So here's a compilation of most of the seminal records of this golden olden period for your enjoyment and edification. P.S.: For lack of a better word, I settled for ,abstract hip hop", a term I impudently culled from Colin Larkin's ,Virgin Encyclopedia of Dance Music". Please note that there wasn't a ,brand name" for this kind of music at the time, terms like ,turntablism" or ,DJ culture" hadn't been coined yet. P.P.S.: Like several of my mixes, this contains a hidden bonus track.
Feedback:
hi mNa the postman was just here and he had a delivery from Berlin to me, this is a good education mix and should be necessairly to know your roots, have a great trip and hopefully you got a package from me when you arrive home again
Excellent Thomas.
I don't know much about hiphop, but I haven't yet heard a bad mix from you, so please put this on the pile for me, my friend. Hope you're well, ain't heard from you in a while.
Thomas....you contain multitudes. Much good stuff here...., in an era, as you say, when the way was being paved.
smokin.
That coldcut remix of "Paid in Full" is outstanding. Cutting up a classic song and making a classic song in the process. Great mix.
Wicked mix my man. All the classics are represented here. Beat Dis and Pump Up the Volume sounded like nothing else on the radio back in the day. Thanks for the Bastard Pop plug.
Looks great, Thomas.
This looks fantastic. I'd love to hear it!
Hi Thomas, good to see you back. Good looking mix, not really my bag but, like Gerry, I'd trust you're judgement on these things. I hope this works as a middle aged persons guide too :)
jawoll, gro¯artiger stoff. sind ein paar remixe drauf die ich gern mal h÷ren wnrde. wenn dich mal wieder ein tausch juckt....gerne. wobei ich ja mit kassetten bei dir nich so gut lande.
"say kids" and "more beats + pieces" ruled my stereo for YEARS. crucial stuff here, boyo.
