Sonic Youth
Comment:
Sonic Youth may have rewritten the rock 'n' roll rulebook — or burned it in a Lower East Side trashcan fire and assembled a new one from the ashes — but they didn't develop in a vacuum. Visiting the world of B-sides and bonus tracks offers intriguing hints at what makes the band tick. When Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo erect a wailing wall of psychedelia-soaked noise for a cover of the Beatles' Eastern-influenced "Within You Without You," the generation gap is bridged by a paisley plank of fuzzy guitars. Having laid the groundwork for grunge, it's only natural that Sonic Youth would acknowledge its offspring by bringing an even more unhinged aural assault to Mudhoney's "Touch Me I'm Sick." And ever unpredictable, the band pays tribute to Big Apple punk's great-grandfathers the New York Dolls by unplugging, on a low-volume visit to proto-punk nugget "Personality Crisis."
