Comment:

I can't say enough good things about Ben Vaughn. Here's a guy who put out several great records in the 80s with the Combo, largely to little fanfare (though he developed a rabid faithful following). Solo albums followed which found him doing everything from recording entire records in his '65 Rambler to writing with Kim Fowley to exposing the world to countless obscure brilliant singles (via his Mono USA release). Slowly, word got out about this modern day Lee Hazelwood (with better disposition). This led to producing gigs (Charlie Feathers, etc.), tribute albums (Sonny Bono), and to the present day - writing soundtrack music for tv shows such as "That 70s Show" and "Third Rock from the Sun". I've tried to include some of my fave Ben songs, as well as some that just capture what I like most about him. He's an ace producer, which I got to witness first hand when he produced a single for a band of mine in the early 90s. Great guy, great performer, great taste, and all-around record lover.

I've heard good stuff about this guy, mainly from Grindstone magazine, but I'm unfamilliar with his music. I don't know where we are in terms of trades but I would love a copy of this.

I never even HEARD of this guy before, so I just might want to have this someday. And what was the name of your early-90s band again?

In the dark here also, but the Lee Hazelwood comparison certainly sparks an interest.

The LH comparison is probably more the spirit than the letter. They're both producer-types who also wrote roots-y songs. Both have surf roots and both are guys with a vision in their head. Whereas Lee headed into loungier territory (as well as soul-bearing stuff), Ben evolved into soundtrack/background/seque music that fit perfectly to a scene. Also forget to highlight some of Ben's other work of interest - liner notes for a Joe South comp (now THERE is a guy who needs a tribute disc - any takers?), producing Ween and Los Straitjackets records, playing in Pink Slip Daddy, producing the Friggs, and gosh, a whole lot more. The man knows his rock and roll.

Only vaguely aware of Ben Vaughn, but I gotta tell you how great and informative your mix's and the accompanying "liner notes" are...Essential stuff, without question...

Holy Ghost is, in rare moment of lucidity, correct about Ben. We hung at his pad after playing a gig with the Friggs. The band, Mr. Mohr, was the Frampton Brothers.

I just put "Jerry Lewis in France" on a mix last Thursday ... it is the only Ben Vaughn I have ... I might need this to go on the list ...

I can attest that Ben is one nice guy and a great lover of records and an expert on all things dealing with the Dodge Rambler. His own work is great too. His solo work or bands he has played in like The Sic Kidz (under the name Sal Mineo's Only Son)and Pink Slip Daddy are all great stuff. His production of the mentioned folks and Arthur Alexander too. Geographic proximity (now he has moved) afforded me the luxury to get to know this guy.

Lee Hazlewood/Ben Vaughn? Huh?! I can't say I see a resemblance.

Sean -- missed this one the first time around. Nice to see some credit thrown Ben's way. We had a beat-up copy of the "My First Band" single back in my college radio dj'ing days, and it was one of those things that was played relentlessly. "Mmmotor Vehicle" and "I Dig Your Wig" also got a lot of attention. I lost track of him after that, but I picked up his greatest hits album a few months back and it's loads of fun (though yours looks more interesting).
