You gotta start with the songs — some of the greatest soul sounds ever dreamed up: the Motown Sound stunner "My Girl"; the chiffon daydream "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)" followed-up by "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone," a turnabout that trades sweetness and light for a wah-wah pedal and a whole lotta truth. Then there's sheer presence: in the big soul dictionary, right next to the word "dynamic" there's a picture of the Temptations. OK, maybe two or three pictures to cover the revolving-door personnel shifts. But the fact remains: nobody matched musical majesty to kings-of-the-floor dance moves better than Motown's "Emperors of Soul."
