Comment:
Ya know, I feel more squeamish about submitting this than I ever have about submitting a mix. In some ways, this band is very offensive to me (the fact that they were one of the first bands to *not* break a sweat onstage, the fact that they seem to take themselves entirely too seriously for their own good, the fact that so many elements of their music are anti-rock 'n' roll), but I can't help liking the songs on this mix, along with a couple of others that didn't fit. So compiling this was a lot like compiling my Doors comp or my Jeff Buckley comp (or even a couple of others)... when (on the two occasions per year that this happens) I decide that there's a Depeche Mode song that I feel like hearing, I now have it (plus everything else that I'll ever want to hear by this band) available to me in one place. At least I'm honest about the fact that I've got some occasional guilty pleasures, right? Thanks to my long-lost friend Baskin for the CDR of Black Celebration, to Jen for the singles, and to zachrobbins for the Music for the Masses track that Jen didn't have ("The Things You Said") and for the Violator tracks ("Waiting for the Night," "Blue Dress," and "Clean"). FYI, I used the singles versions of any track that was issued as a single (to conserve space and to reduce the band's sometimes overwhelming self-indulgence level). Once again, if anyone has a CD copy of their version of "Route 66", I'd be interested in acquiring it. (Note: This mix was revised to include "World Full of Nothing" and "Personal Jesus" just prior to dubbing; "Black Celebration" was removed in favor of the latter.)Feedback:
You should never feel squeamish about posting a mix. It's all about taking chances. Of course, that's easy to say before you've actually seen someone post a Depeche Mode mix. No, just kidding Rob, just rubbing it in. Personally, I could never stand them, always saw them as a ready-for-the-masses rip-off of far better stuff by Echo and New Order. "Everything Counts" was kinda fun at the time, though.
What no "Personal Jesus" and I can't after all these years still don't stand "Just can't get enough"
"Personal Jesus" was one of the last songs cut. And if it means anything to you, Marc, I *love* Echo & the Bunnymen's first four albums waaaayyyy more than Depeche Mode and certainly prefer New Order (although I'm missing too many key New Order tracks to make a mix).
ahhh yes, Never Let Me Down Again; my favorite D.P. tune; what did Beavis & Butthead say the name meant again?
I, for one, enjoy seeing people's guilty pleasure mixes. It makes me feel much better about some of the stuff hidden in the dark recesses of my closet.
Is there any NO album tracks you miss, just give me an email
I too like guilty pleasure mixes and tracks 2 thru 4 would make my list plus a few others scattered throughout their catalog.
wow - if this is a guilty pleasures mix then, based on the one I am contemplating, lock me up now and throw away the key. I like the way you stuck to singles given your discussion of an easier way out using album tracks.
No 'Enjoy the Silence'? Criminal! Well done for including 'Just Can't Get Enough' though. Ace pop song.
Wow! You actually did it! I didn't think you had it in ya! ;) Looks good. I wouldn't count them amongst my guilty pleasure bands, but they produced some enjoyable stuff, most of which is represented here.
In the mid to late '80s, there seemed to be a holy trinity of "alternative" bands among my peer group: Depeche Mode, The Cure and The Smiths. At the time I saw all three of them as uber-trendy and didn't get into any of them. (Years later, though, when I was in college, I fell in love with The Smiths...and still hold them in high regard.) While I like some DM and own two of their albums, I've never been too big on them, so I can relate somewhat to your dilemma here. On the other hand, I absolutely love synths and don't care who knows it (nor do I care if synths are considered "anti-rock 'n roll"). I dunno, though...I've always liked Vince Clarke's one album with DM (as well as the works of Erasure and *especially* Yaz) much better.
BTW, isn't that "full length" version of "Just Can't Get Enough" called the "Schizo Mix"?
wait...am i the only one who is missing "policy of truth" on this mix...looks good. i for one don't know a lot of these tracks, but, i don't really know anything other than the music about this band-but policy of truth always seemed like one of their best songs? oh well, maybe there is some reason, pretence? i dunno-anyway- keep up the good work, glad to help ya out
I, too, am all for the "guilty pleasure" side of the show! ((Can't say too much about the choices.., I did enjoy "the Silence" back when it came out.., just always putting my $ toward Echo & New Order--as has been mentioned--and depended on friends to hear anything further.)
"Policy of Truth" is one of my least-favorite Depeche Mode songs, to be honest with you.
seriously??? why?? i always got such a hit from that song (i really don't know anything about its context or history)
but i guess in terms of DM pretence, that is a good song to lay the hate on

I don't know, really. I guess I think that the lyrics are pretentious (as you've sort of conceded) and that the "beat" of it is sort of monotonous. It's also the kind of Depeche Mode song, in general, that I don't really like much (for lack of a better explanation), like "A Question of Time", for example.
