Comment:

I've done one of these for each year since '77, and this is, alas, one of the weaker ones. I didn't find 2002 to be terribly inspiring (hence the delay in finally sitting down and compiling this), having spent far more money on reissues than new albums. The best album of the year (Wilco) was really a 2001 release delayed by the well-known label dispute; some of my favorite bands of the past decade had lackluster albums (Apples, GbV, Luna), and some of my favorites were pretty mellow (most notably the wonderful Lovers album), thus not best suited for my (generally upbeat) annual mix. Of course, there's always the possibility that, as I turn the corner on my mid-30's, I'm just not exposed to as much good new music as I used to be. Either that or a lot of music out right now just kinda sucks.

Can't comment of most of these, Marc, but I can say that the Wondermints were very tight when playing behind Brian Wilson back in 2000. Too bad his voice was the weak link, but it was great just to see him. Being from So. Cal., I fully subscribe to the So. Cal. fun-in-the-sun myth he helped to create. I bought Luna's Penthouse, which sounded better in the record store than on my player at home. Maybe you can recommend what you think is their best album?

P: All my Annual Mix covers are filched from websites dedicated to really bad vinyl. I have absolutely no artistic abilities. TSOOL was released in either late 2001 or early 2002 in Sweden (I've seen different street dates), but not released in the US 'til mid 2002. Steve: Penthouse is my favorite Luna album, so if you don't like that one you're probably not going to like the band. Pup Tent is a bit more upbeat and electric, but most their albums have a similar feel. I'd have a couple martinis, slip on some headphones, and give 'em one more shot.

A very good one, Marc. You have a lot of my favorites on here, even though there's not of overlap between our year-end mixes.

Yeah, Wilco and the Lips top my best-of list. I'm curious if you heard Solomon Burke's from last year, with all the songs written by Waits, Lowe, Costello, Dylan and the gang. I thought there was some pretty good stuff on there that may have snuck onto my best-of. Anyhow, great stuff here, and I too love the cover.

Good work and I like the cover too. This has made me think how James Yorkston's record seems to have been ignored. That was top of my list last year (after the Flaming Lips. Who you've got).

A lot of nice tracks by some great talent on this......the stretch from 15 to the end is outstanding.....and the top four, with Interpol in the mid-section.
