Comment:
Call me an indie rock heretic, but I'm of the belief that the Pixies never had a truly great album. Sure, Doolittle was close, but I don't really find any of their albums start-to-finish perfect, and have a hard time sitting all the way through any of them. Which makes them the perfect band for a compilation (and may explain why this mix joins a dozen or so others on AOTM, but damnit, I wanna pick my own faves...). So many truly incredible, groundbreaking tunes spread over 5 albums and a handful of singles, compilation tracks, and BBC sessions (I opted against including any live tracks here, though they were a blazing live band). "Debaser" remains one of the most exciting songs ever recorded; "Where Is My Mind?" is every bit as captivating as it was the day I first heard it; Kim's "Gigantic" firmly demonstrates why Frank/Francis was a buffoon to keep her in the background.
Feedback:
hard to go wrong with material like this
...came to know
Pixies after they'd broken up & Deal had formed the Breeders
& though I might agree with the statement about not having one stellar album...innovative they were...
(sorta' like Eno's quote on VU's The Velvet Underground
--only sold a few hundred copies, but everyone who bought it formed their own band)
I know
Bowie has consistently listed them (Pixies) as core inspiration for hisself (witness his cover of Cactus off Heathen).
nice comp...!

Ooh, I don't know about that, Marc... I think that Surfer Rosa is a really great album, and, as you said, Doolittle is close. I've been wanting to do one of these for a long time now, but I have no rarities or b-sides to justify such an enterprise.
Your picks are substantially similar to what mine would be, however.
I think you picked all my faves as well, especially Into the White, whatta great song.
dude, come on pilgrim is indisputably perfect but it is an ep-surefer rosa and doolittle are as close to a perfect album as you are gonna get minus beatles, smiths, radiohead---and i can't think of a track on surfer rosa that doesn't qualify as great.
I know, I'm a bit of an iconoclast, but Surfer Rosa just kinda gives me a headache (then again, so do most Albini productions). I still have no trouble cranking up the Sonic Youth, Jesus & Mary Chain, Mission of Burma, and Husker Du, but something about Surfer Rosa doesn't work for me -- with the exception of the central trio of River Euphrates-Gigantic-Mind, it's never won me over.
I think I'd have to give "Doolittle" the nod as a truly great album, but I can see where you're coming from. They are a great band, and undeniably original, but its not the kind of stuff I listen to over and over again, like most of the things I consider great. "Doolittle" is a spectacular Friday night album though.
I hate to admit this since he's such a shit, but Steve Albini is my favorite rock producer, bar none. And yeah, I'm with zach--I can't think of a Surfer Rosa song that I don't love (particularly those you mentioned, "Bone Machine" and "Break My Body"). Come On Pilgrim is also phenomenal.
i can't agree that gigantic is as great a song as break my body, something agaisnt you, river euphrates...but Doolittle, whi ch has one song that I can't stand-silver-keep in mind that song comes between Hey and Gouge away, enough said, oh and if it is still believed that the pixies didn't have a perfect album, doolittle has this song called here comes your man which is classic by anyone's standards- but yeah, i love the pixies a lot
Damn good stuff, but I miss 'Caribou'. Surfer Rosa's a great album and their best album, for my penny's worth.
Missing some of my faves (Tame, Rock Music, Subbacultcha), but still great. And I hate to sound like a parrot, but I think "Doolittle" is a damn perfect album. I think "Surfer Rosa" is just slightly overrated, though. On the other hand, I think "Tromp Le Monde" is *underrated*.
Okay. I'm about to post my Pixies mix (done specifically with you in mind, but not with your track listing anywhere near me). So I count 14 out of 29 shared tracks (mine wound up being 29 songs, as well).
