Comment:
A single-artist mix honoring my favorite old-school prog band (with the possible exceptions of Gabriel-era Genesis, Soft Machine or Henry Cow), sort of designed as an antidote to my last single-artist mix. Obviously, due to space limitations, I had to make a decision whether to emphasize the more abstract material or the more song-oriented material and I chose the latter. This means, of course, that some of their longer pieces--most notably "Fracture" and "Larks' Tonuges, Part One"--had to be eliminated. I also chose to ignore the Belew-Levin line-up, as that, for all intents and purposes, is a much different band (not that I have anything against them, but I prefer Crimson's 70's work).Feedback:
Funny, I've been planning one of these for a long time (just haven't gotten around to buying Lizard yet, an album I despised way back in the day but perhaps is due for reconsideration). This pretty much tracks the picks I would have made (though perhaps I would've swapped out Moonchild & Wind for Epitaph and Crimson King); I'm leaning towards a 2-cd mix, tacking on some Giles Giles & Fripp and McDonald & Giles to the beginning, and the 3 original Belew-era albums at the end (I haven't kept up with their post-'80's configurations).
Interesting. I'd *never* ditch "Moonchild"--definitely one of my favorites on here--and I'm not all that big on "Epitaph". I also like Lizard quite a bit, but that may be because it has tremendous sentimental value to me (my uncle, who was most responsible for encouraging my burgeoning music obsession at age 9, had the record on vinyl and I had it on loan for a couple of years, probably because of the nifty cover art).
looks good, can't say i know all these songs, but choice of what i do
lovely
If there's a progband I should bought a record of it's probarbly these guys. love that Nightwatch song
Excellent job on this one! All great choices!
good stuff rob. I always considered them at the forefront of the prog movement. Perhaps the band which most epitomised that sound.
Oddly enough, I'm only familiar with "Discipline" (which I love) and "Beat."
Knowing the length of Crimson material, it is quite the undertaking to make a well rounded one-CD mix of the period. Good job. In the Court, I use to think was dated but subsequent listens, I have come to find it quite fitting witb the times (theme wise). Starless, Larks Tongue and Red are still my faves.
Classic selections. I think that a good second volume could be made from this period of the band. I also think that a good comp of the Discipline-era stuff could be made. I think those albums are worth a listen.
The new album, 'The Power to Believe', is very worthwhile.
Nice list..but where the f*** is 'Starless'? :)
