Inspired by Rob, I've gone ahead and posted a mix of a band I most certainly do not like very much but, still, occasionally enjoy as a guilty pleasure. Plant's vocals and lyrics bug me (anyone over the age of 15 who gets off on them needs to leave the monster car show behind and grow up), and most of the big hits are so drilled into my brain after 25 years of listening to the radio that I can't listen to them without wincing. Still, they had one of the most brutally wonderful rhythm sections in rock, and Page did fire off some insanely unforgettable riffs. For the most part, my own taste leads towards the more poppy (and perhaps slightly less radio-overkilled) tracks. And count me among the very very small minority of listeners who actually likes "Carouselambra" (albeit just the main synth riff; the middle third is boring as all get-out).

Ha! Great notes. And some good choices, although I have a *real* aversion to "Misty Mountain Hop" and can't stomach the lyrics to "Ramble On" (one of the most offensive of those types of Plant lyrics that you mentioned).

To be honest, I kinda tune out the lyrics to "Ramble On"; I just like the acoustic verse/rocking chorus structure. Plus, more importantly, I needed a short song to fill this out.

"in the darkest depts of Mordor" ? Marc, stop right there and put on a Black Flag album immediately..... OK, I've been known to dig Zep records as much as the next person. I'll say this for them - there may have never, ever, EVER been a better drum sound than the one on their records.

Ah, I have some very fond high-school memories of "When the Levee Breaks", but this is neither the time nor the place. I do occassionally like to pull some of those records out and give them a listen, and feel nostalgic. But, like Sean said, then it's time for some Black Flag, just to clean myself off.

Mordor, schmordor. Guys you gotta remember, thsi was the EARLY seventies and Tolkien was still cool. In a better world, Zep and Black Flag could co-exist peacefully...................................nah!

I've always had a love/hate relationship with Led Zeppelin. Those of us who have been around the track a few times and maybe saw them perform in the early 70s know what I mean. They were a great live band in the very early years and their music was initially very fresh sounding on the radio. Look at what else there was on top 40 radio when Whole Lotta Love came screaming out of the airwaves in late 1969 and early 1970. It was awesome. There was nothing else like it and the first three albums are great. Then came IV in 72 and the mindless brain washing repetition that went on throughout the rest of the 70s. IV was a really good album but the radio programmers killed it for a lot of people and helped bring on the backlash of punk. I never bought another album after IV. When I dj'd in bars throughout most of the 80s I would only play cuts from the first 3 albums if asked. I've only started listening again to LZ recently when I started replacing vinyl with the new re-mastered CDs. LZ II and III are a couple of the best rock albums of all time but mainly because of their impact upon release. I think it would be hard to judge them without knowing the world of rock and roll before so called "classic rock" was jammed into everyone's ears and the LZ imitators stunk up the airwaves.

I'm one of those folks who think that the musical quality of the vocals are much more important than the lyrics. That's the case with Zep first two albums - who cares what the lyrics are, but does the voice complement the playing?Another example (out of many) would be Van Morrison on Veedon Fleece. I'm sure the lyrics are fine, but what beautiful vocals complementing the music. Another example - Jack Bruce's singing on Badge much more important to the song than the lyrical content. Yeah, there are exceptions, like honing in the lyrics of the Dylan stuff I have, specifically Bringing It All Back Home, and Blood on the Tracks among others.

I know what you mean, Steve, but Eric Clapton sings "Badge."

Well Rob - you've just cleared up a 35 year (or so) misapprehension. Thanks!

I could live happily the rest of my life without ever having to hear a note of Stairway to Heaven again. Not that it's a bad song, but hearing it 1,325 times was enough. I won't subject anyone to my Zeppelin mix, but it would definitely include the Ocean (missing) and Celebration Day (accounted for)

I actually love Carouselambra but I sometimes wish it would fade out after seven minutes. And yes - best. Drum. Sound. Ever.
