Comment:
At long last, my computer is fixed and I had the luxury of doing a mixed-genre mix just for me, Me, ME!!! (Although, in all honesty, the unconsciously-themed "lost love" subject matter of most of the tracks on this mix may be depressing enough to fit conor's request for a "depression" mix, so who knows....) At any rate, the "lost love" theme does *not* reflect anything going on in my personal life (if anything, I/we am/are happier than ever), other than the fact that these are all of the songs that I've been loving lately that would *not* go on a Jen Mix (except "Freckles" and "Bring It On", perhaps). Here's an interesting exercise for all of my fellow record geeks out there (although, once again, I only determined this *after* the mix was finished): spot all of the musical cross-references or associations between songs and artists here and, well, you'll be King of the AotM Record Geeks for the day. Here are some hints... 1) one band here has recorded covers of two other songs on this mix; 2) an additional song here was covered by the leader/creative force behind one of the other bands here; and, lastly, 3) an artist on this mix has collaborated/recorded with the one of the primary creative forces of yet another band on this mix. (I'm sorry that I can't be more specific, but I feel that I've already given too much away.) In other news, this mix flows strangely well aside from a slight glitch at the beginning of the Van Halen track that makes the track open a bit abruptly (believe me, though, that particular transition is better than it looks on paper). Title from the Evan Dando song. P.S.: Thanks to Jana for the Dusty song (oops, I forgot), and to my friends Dean ("Unchained") and Rich ("I Agree with Pat Metheny") for their contributions to this mix.Feedback:
This is great. Lots of fantastic picks, especially Dusty, of course.
love the nick cave pick. seeing Sly on here makes my feel bad i have never had any of him in my collection. congrats on getting the pc back.
Nice one Rob. My geekiness fails me, off the cuff, apart from (3) wherein Paul Weller worked with Dr John on Anutha Zone.Good to see a name I recognise on the 'recents' list! :~)
Nice stuff. Love the Dylan and Dusty, and I'll take your word that Guilded Splinters fits right in there. Haven't heard the RT track, but I've never known him to do a bad one.
Ooh. I didn't know that, Muzag. However, that was *not* the connection I was referencing in (3). *clears throat* This does not mean, however, that those two artists may not be connected in another portion of my question... ;-)
Cute. Love the Goldfrapp song. As for Van Halen....
you haven't lived until you've seen alison goldfrapp in the flesh, singing like an other-wordly being.
oh yeah, that dando song is key.
Nice mix...esp the dusty, dylan, dando, & the dr.
my geekiness fails sire
This looks awesome Rob! Nice way to celebrate your return to burndom! =)
Looks great, I especially like the Dusty and R. Thompson picks. Great theme too, I adore lost-love songs, which probably explains why "Blood on the Tracks" still just kills me.
answer to Q1 should be White stripes, cos they've recorded "I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself"
Oh, what was I thinking? Peter's right, 1 is the Stripes, because they covered the Dusty song and the Dylan song. And two is Weller covering "I Walk on Gilded Splinters", but that probably could have been ascertained from your comment below. I don't know #3 unfortunately. It's going to bother me now though.
OK, I need to at least guess on number three, because I end up sitting here thinking about it. I know Nick Cave covered a Dylan song at the end of "Murder Ballads", and there were about eight people singing on it. I can't check if one of them is Bob because the case is buried in all my unpacked shit from moving, but I'll guess that one was. A guess is all it is, however.
Good job, fellas, although you still have not correctly guessed #3. Should I tell you now or wait another day? I'd bet that if Muzag thought about it a bit, he'd come up with the answer. Also I feel confident that Curtis Burns, CASETTA and lo-fi would come through... where *are* you folks? :-)
Super duper mix, Rob. The dusty song is a personal fav of mine. Also dig the Dylan and Dr John cutz
Nice one Rob. Didn't David Lee Roth collaborate with Dylan on a yet to be released album? Okay it's a wild guess. I'll let the next batter take his/her turn at bat.
Lovely mix, I'm glad that your computer is fixed;-) My computer is still DEAD=(
I guess I'm too late for the pop-questions=(
I actually forget how funny it is to make TAPES, well, meet you in our 2007 WORLD-CUP-TRADE!

Ok, I will answer #3. Richard Thompson collaborated with the guitarist Fred Frith who was involved with Henry Cow.
Thank you, Tom. :-)
Ion, you may be on to something. Lets just spread the rumor that David Lee Roth and Dylan will collaborate on a salute to Klezmer music to honor their Jewish heritage (produced by Kramer). If by chance a recording like this does materialize ...you heard it here first.
Sorry I missed the Q&A. Looks like you've been record shopping in the same aisle as I have lately, Rob.
