Comment:

this my sorry attempt at a noncliched political mix....and by noncliched, i mean no protest songs about the vietnam war because there are definitely a bunch of other cliched political songs on here. i tried to make it at least a little different from your garden variety sing-a-long with joan baez. the first thing that leaps out at you about this mix is all the kathleen hannah, a whopping three songs that include the queen mother of the riot grrrl movement. i know that seems like a lot and i'm kind of breaking the cardinal rule of mix tape making by having more than one song by the same artist but i justify it by saying that bikini kill, julie ruin, and le tigre are all very different bands with very different styles. that counts, right? i also want to state for the record that i did not mean for both the sex pistols song and the dead kennedys song to be next to each other because they both have 'holiday' in the title. that was a freak accident. i used the yo la tengo version of "nuclear war" instead of the sun ra version because i tend to like it more. the chorus of kids that sing back up is genius because a) listening to children sing about inevitable destruction that the possession of nuclear arms will bring reminds you that nuclear war won't just affect adults, it affects everyone and b) it is funny to hear a bunch of kids say "motherfucker."

Could we please stop saying "grrrl." Do any of you women out there actually buy into that crap, like it means anything? Are you empowered now? Feeling the love of worldwide sisters uniting? Please... I'm surprised you've got no Rage Against the Machine on here, though that is most definitely a cliche of tpolitical protest. Ditto Propghandi, yes? Some Chumbawumba would've done well here, + some Moxy Fruvos. Great 1st half, with an almost as good 2nd half. Nice mix girl (girl, girl, girl, girl, GIRL + let's keep that straight, shall we?) Out.

well, i used the three r'd version of 'girl' because the kathleen hannah/tobi vail penned fanzine was called "riot grrrl." using that spelling is the correct spelling of the movement. i assume you aren't arguing the relevancy of feminism because that's whole a different defense, but, as corny as it sounds, i feel a great sense of comfort knowing that if some guy grabs my ass there will be a bunch of other grrrls (hehe, sorry, couldn't help myself) willing and ready to kick his ass with me.

despite the fact that i'm not the greatest fan of them, i actually ended up staying away from ratm because my mom really likes them and that's kind of disorienting. plus the sins that the majority of ratm are committing in audioslave kept them off this mix (especially due to the fact that audioslave is quite possibly the worst band name ever.)
