Comment:

A wonderful, overlooked SF-based singer/songwriter, Barbara comes across like early Liz Phair or Suzanne Vega, only with a much cooler record collection. She's appeared in various incarnations over the past decade and a half, both solo and with various backing bands, managing to craft some memorable originals while breathing life into covers of artists ranging from New Zealand indie greats like the Clean & the Bats to classic rockers like Wings, Badfinger, and the Pretty Things. Her back catalog can be pretty hard to track down, but plenty of gems there for those who look hard enough.

I only have a couple of Manning's CDs, but it makes me happy to see this collection here.

I would *love* to hear this, Marc. Remember when we were vaguely discussing trades before...?

Very worthy tribute Marc. Please pencil me in for a future trade, becuase there are several songs here I've never heard, like that Clean cover. She's got one of the coolest altos in rock. Nice that you included "San Diego Zoo" by the 6ths -- one of my favorite songs. Do you have anything by her old band World of Pooh or 28th Day? I have a single by the former somewhere in my mess of vinyl.

I don't have her albums with Pooh or 28th Day; I don't think they've ever come out on cd (though some tracks were used in her collection of rarities from a couple years back).

I had been meaning to do a Manning comp for ages, but there are still a few holes in my collection... You nailed just about every favorite from the albums I do own, though; you even got the lovely "San Diego Zoo" from the 6ths album! Great job! . . . Suggestions for volume 2: "Joed Out", "Don't Rewind", "Scissors" and the lovely, lovely "Talk All Night"...

I know very little about Barbara Manning, just a bit of SF Seals, but that bit makes me want to hear more.
If you'd have any interest in trading
for anything, I'd really like to hear this --

I need to fill you in on some records. I have WOP on cd and all the Go luckys and new stuff that probably wont make it to record....
thank you for remembering and caring to do this mix.

Awesome. Good mix, "B4 We Go Under" is one of the best songs ever.

Put together a Vol. II (now, 4 years later), and make sure to lob "Someone Wants You Dead," "Haze is Free (Mounting a Broken Ladder)," and "Optimism is its Own Reward" on there !

Barbara's got a radio show every Saturday night on kzfr.org. Check it out.
