Comment:
2 CDs, not a cassetteDedicated to my friends Mark Orbell and Glenn Downs - dois Brasileiros
I decided I had to post a Brazil mix (spelled with an S in Portuguese) since I don't see David Byrne's Brazil mixes posted on the site. I've got his first, Beleza Tropical, which is excellent, but have not heard the samba (v.2), forro (v.3), or second MPB (v.4).
You can read all you want to about these styles by roaming Amazon, or searching Google. On the disc we have some Bossa Nova (New Wave) compliments of Antonio "Tom" Jobim and his guest stars. Any saxophone you hear is Stan Getz. Jobim or J. Gilberto may share vocals with listed female vocalists. J. Gilberto adds acoustic guitar on his tracks. According to Arto Lindsay, this style is a combination of certain strains in traditional Brazilian popular music and the advanced harmonies of American cool jazz.
There are 4 forro tracks, the countryside party music from the northern state of Bahia. They are very recognizable by the accordion. They are tracks 11, 16, and 21 on CD1, and track 5 on CD2. Depending on tempo, to me the feel is like idling at a Parisian cafT, or dancing around a campfire. It has been compared to Cajun Zydeco, and is said to be analogous to Mexican mariachi. Btw, forro is pronounced something like "foH - ho", with the harsh H coming from the back of the throat.
Most of the other tracks are MPB, or Musica Popular do Brasil (Brazilian Popular Music). From what I can tell this is a very wide-ranging category consisting of some of the classic, often African-influenced music from the 1970's, to very easy listening (sometimes too easy). I used a few of the classics from Beleza Tropical, and some of the sweetest more recent nuggets by Caetano Veloso and Marisa Monte. Where does Joao Bosco fit in? Who knows, but I like the song.
To round it out we have Alceu Valenca, an acoustic guitar folk artist with a rebellious-sounding edge to the vocals. Some of the reggae stuff I considered did not make the grade (I bought it blind) compared to the great classics from Jamaica, but I did use one nice Cidade Negra track with guest artist Gilberto Gil's unique, high pitched vocal gymnastics filling in.
Next time I'll have to investigate the Tropicalia movement, and find some of those goodies by Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, and others.
Much of the mix is live, maybe 30% or so. Repeated tracks means that one is studio, and one is live. Track 5 on CD1 is the same song as the live track 13 on CD2, with a difference in spelling between the listings. Please forgive the fact that I did not install the Portuguese character set. The names and words have many, many squiggles, accents, tildes, etc. Hope you enjoy this.

Feedback:
Wow, Steve, this looks really exciting. I can't wait to hear this!
I'd love to hear it. I'd really be into a tropicalia mix, too! Caetano V. is amazing - and what an interesting life he has led. Great, great stuff.
I heard a story on NPR recently about the Brazilian music scene and it sounds fascinating. I'd love to hear this mix.
Dude, I love the idea that you did this mix - thank you. And you get credit for the "ortografia correcta da palavra Brasil." You might want to investigate music that younger Brazilians would like, too.
My copy arrived today - you are one kick-ass guy. I'll give you a review after I make my way through it. Thanks a million.
Mixxer - my sis-in-law just gave me a copy of a Zuco 103 disc. She loved the track she heard on Six Feet Under. Only played it once, but initial reaction is that it is a little techno/clubby for me. For now, I plan to mine the classics from the 60's and 70's until I get steered to current future classics. I know there is an iceberg of fantastic stuff from down there, and I have only a couple of ice trays.
Steve - OK here is a recommendation - Daniela Mercury, a singer from Bahia. It is a style known in Brazil as axT; she has a strong voice and is generally backed by excellent African-influenced drumming. Tends to be up-tempo from what you have here, but I think you will enjoy. BTW, what is the the connection of your sis-in-law with Brazil? (Desculpe, estou muito curioso.)
Steve -- This stuff is great. Perfect for hot, steamy evenings... Sitting outside... Sipping red wine...
Very well done. A fantastic mix.
Very well done. A fantastic mix.
(mail drop)Steve - Thx for the note. Your next trip to Brazil will be great. The dollar is real strong against the real now so you can pick a bunch of new local CDs for mixes.
Great mix, Steve-- I've really been enjoying it!
Great mix, Steve! Sorry I missed it when it first came out.You can't really go wrong with any of the artists here. Of the less obvious ones, I've a lot of time for Chico Buarque.I've been planning a similar themed mix for a while but have been stymied by the disappearance of my Tamba Trio CDs during a move - hopefully they're in an unopened box somewhere :~)
hmm - I know someone who just got back from Brazil & I'm trying to get an orientation to the music, this looks like it might be the place to start -
could I offer you anything in trade for this??

I love Brazilian music, and have the Samba and Forro CDs (both are good, but I really like O Samba and Beleza Tropical the most). Also a big fan of the Tropicalia movement (you've heard Os Mutantes, right?) Maybe we could trade for this...check out my Cafe International disc.
