The Rolling Stones '70s-'00s
Comment:
The further along the Stones went in their journey, the more they were able to show the tender side that lay beneath that tough, rock ’n’ roll exterior. A middle-aged Mick mourns the loss of a love to a flashy young rival on “New Faces,” over a heavenly harpsichord that harks back to the baroque balladry of “Play With Fire.” Keith is reborn as a Philly soul-style crooner with the moody R&B moan of 1997’s “How Can I Stop.” And the offhanded elegance of an acoustic elegy for an absent lover (“This Place Is Empty”) proves that even in the 21st century, the Stones could still hit a heart-shaped target dead-on.
