Back in the early ’80s, a quiet storm washed across both the radio dial and the very heart of jazz itself — a new-ish sound that cobbled together bits of R&B, funk, pop, and the lighter elements of fusion. Dubbed “smooth jazz,” the music owed more to the likes of Brubeck, Getz, and Guaraldi’s more mainstream offerings than it did to the likes of Miles Davis or John Coltrane. And, sure, people squabbled over whether it truly was jazz, but those arguments have been going on since Louis Armstrong picked up his first horn. Fact is, the public loved it. Still do. From George Benson to Basia, from Kenny G to Peter White, smooth-jazz artists have not only convinced a whole new audience that jazz isn’t necessarily a four-letter word, but they’ve also opened up a whole new musical world.
