Comment:
Here's another one to baffle 98% of AOTM-ers. Maybe you know Mandy from his single (Emmy-winning) season on 'Chicago Hope' or as the campy guy who repeatedly sang 'Over the Rainbow' on Letterman. He combines the most powerful set of pipes in the theatre biz with an almost complete lack of restraint or shame. Comparable to Jolson in this regard, so no surprise he recorded two of Jolson's trademarks on his debut. And yet he is one of the foremost interpreters of Sondheim, witness his bravura Sondheim concert and recording last year, well represented in the last half-dozen tracks here, with more Sondheim scattered throughout. Mandy is over the top, painfully needy emotionally, an acquired taste to be sure. At times a histrionic screamer devastatingly parodied in a 'Rainbow' rewrite titled 'Somewhat Overindulgent,' but the sort of outsized personality and talent who is in such short supply in the theatre today. This comp, made as a gift for my son's piano teacher, represents all his solo records plus a couple cast albums, with perhaps an overreliance on the loud, fast, funny ones. Fasten your seat belts, it's gonna be a bumpy night.Feedback:
This is also the fellow from the Princess Bride movie? I had no idea that he had such an oeuvre.
Excellent work. "Having just a vision is no solution, everything depends on execution."
Nicely done.
