Comment:

The Screamers were a great late-70s guitar-less LA synthpunk band who could sell out shows faster than almost any other punk band in the area, but never properly recorded an album. I got a hold of a bunch of their MP3s through Soulseek and sifted through them to pick the best. X vocalist Exene said they were the first band she ever saw and no one has been better since. Jello Biafra will talk about them every chance he gets.

They were one of the first artists to incorporate video multi-media into their shows, at a time when very few people even owned a VCR. They were asked to tour with Devo, but they rather foolishly declined. Their ambitions were too grand and never met, so they just kind of called it quits without really documenting anything. There is, however, a terrible movie called Population: One that stars Screamers frontman Tomata DuPlenty. To find out more about the Screamers, check out:

If you need any more celebrity endorsements, here's Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers rambling on about the Screamers:

L.A. punk rock. It is so great isn't it???? Tomata Duplenty was the singer for the Screamers who were intense and wild and had no guitars and when we started the Chili Peppers in '83 the Screamers were already broken up but we met Tomata because he and Anthony lived in the same building on Hollywood blvd and he was nice to us but all I really knew about him was that on the X song 'Adult Books' they say "Does anybody go for Tomata? Yes but he just goes for that special girl who says no" and I never knew what they were talking about because Tomata is gay but X (Billy Zoom era) was one of my favorite bands of all time even though John Denny doesn't think they were that great but even though he was in the Weirdos who rocked like crazy and sang 'Solitary Confinement' he is wrong about X-- they are great. So did I mention that on our first record we have a song called 'Granpappy Duplenty'.
