Comment:

This has been a long, a long time coming... my favorite 80 minutes from one of my favorite vocalists of all-time, culled from the four-disc RCA box set, the single-disc ABKCO collection and the three-disc Specialty box with the Soul Stirrers. And, bizarrely enough, the result *still* bears more than a passing resemblance to the (now out-of-print) single-disc The Man and His Music collection. Oh well, what can you do, right? Sure there are omissions due to space--"Nearer to Thee", "Shake", "Chain Gang", "Rome (Wasn't Built in a Day)", "Love Me", "You Belong to Me", "You Were Made for Me", "Lovable", "Any Day Now", "Fool's Paradise"--but I'm definitely happy with the final result. I suppose it's pretty clear by my selections that I'm more of a sucker for Sam the Balladeer than Sam the Proto-Soul Man. At this time, I'd like to cast my vote for "That's Where It's At" (followed closely by "Bring It on Home to Me") as the best Sam recording... does anyone else want to weigh in on this issue?

a great mix and a long overdue collection of one of my favourite artists of all time, also! "Chain gang" is my favourite, so that would be in there. well done

This looks great, Rob. What a great, great artist. I suppose "A Change is Gonna Come" is my favorite but there are lots of great choices.

Great mix, great collection. I've had The Man and His Music LP and then CD in heavy rotation for many many years. My favorite... a real tough one but quickly off the top of my head - Bring It On Home To Me.

rob, this is awesome. i love sam cooke and would kill to work out a trade. i'm surprised you left out "any day now." that'd be my vote for his best song. his range on that tune is unreal. plus, i really like "how far am i from canaan," esp the end when he starts doing his own thing. i guess my final comment is that i love the "live at the harlem sq. club" disc, and i'm partial to that version of "bring it on home to me" over the recorded one. it's less slick, and his working of the crowd is great. either way, great, great mix. let me know if you're up for trading.
