When I was writing my novel, BRINGING UP THE BONES (Delacorte 2002), I often used music to affect my moods. There's a scene in the book where Bridget, the protagonist, plays Tori Amos's "China" over and over and over again, so of course when I was writing it, I did too. Other songs are simply referenced in the book (like Jim Croce's "Time in a Bottle"), or would've been playing during a scene (Janet Jackson's "Together Again" is intended for the party scene early on, while the Buckwheat Zydeco song is a stand-in for what Bridget and Jasper would've danced to at Fat Rick's). At any rate, I figured I'd go ahead and make the unofficial "soundtrack," for me if no one else.
