Those who know Journey only as a mighty hit-single machine have an incomplete picture of the group’s talents. Their early years emphasized jazz-tinged improvisation; later albums buried more personal material between potential singles. Double back to discover a few more bends in Journey’s road: “Topaz” (from 1975’s self-titled debut) betrays the band’s prog/fusion roots in Santana, and while 1976’s [i]Look Into the Future[/i] reined in that sound for the sake of commercial streamlining, a five-minute-plus piece like “Midnight Dreamer” has more than enough room to breathe, coming across like a heavy, prog-tempered jam.
