Comment:
Legendary Congolese record label Ngoma (the Kikongo term for "drum") was founded in 1947 by Greek businessman and expatriate John Nico JTronimidis (1903-1951) who, over the years, shaped his company into the most important musical business in Central Africa by not only selling music, but phonographs and phonograph needles as well. By the end of the fifties, Ngoma had released about 4000 songs on 45rpm shellacks JTronimidis had manufactured rather cheaply in Belgium and France. In 1963, all the Ngoma master tapes were destroyed when the label's French pressing plant burned down. A complete set of all Ngoma sides ever recorded had been kept in Kinshasa; unfortunately, this collection, too, was destroyed during the 1989 troubles, so most of Ngoma's original recordings are lost forever. This mix was compiled from three pretty-hard-to-come-by collections released by the African Music Archive of the Department of Anthropology and African Studies at the University of Mainz in Germany which is the only one of its kind. Made for the upcoming birthday of a friend who arranged for me to copy said discs a while ago.
Feedback:
interesting stuff, looks like swinging stuff
Holy mackarel! This looks fantastic. I'm familiar with Manu Dibango, but, the rest is, er, uhm, Greek to me.
this looks fantastic!....I wish you would get a tape deck so we could trade.
An artifact of a lost land.
Should be a "must-have" for any serious ethnomusicologist, hence no surprise this one comes from you Thomas. I'll second the erstwhile Mr. Saaf.
I'm lost after Manu Dibango also. Would love to hear this someday.
Damn! I was just putting the finishing touches on my own Congolese pop mix, and you come along and steal my thunder. Thanks a lot. But seriously, I'm lost even before Manu Dibango. Great work once again in exposing us to strange and exotic music.
wow! Awesome stuff, Thomas. I know none of this, and can't wait to get to grips with it in the future. A welcome change from the usual ploughed furrows on AOTM. Excellent work.
Very impressive, and way beyond my scope. Hope to hear it one day.
Excellent stuff, Thomas...this is what AotM should be about. If a have a pile, I'd love this to go on it :)
Great great mix
wow, so nice to see somehting besides whatever is coming out of Brooklyn and Omaha. I'm in awe.
Could this be the all-time hottest music of the 20th century? I guess there are other contenders, but if
there's anything I could trade you for this set, I'd love to hear it.
there's anything I could trade you for this set, I'd love to hear it.
This looks fascinating!
Wow. This looks great. I'd love to hear it.
Amazing story. I'm sure the music lives up to the story of its creation and distribution.
Ok, it's official, I worship you. I will sacrifice my entire left foot for this mix. My appetite for good African music is insatiable.........
