Comment:
Following my recent Big Star, Velvet Underground, and Neil Young tributes, I tried my hand at a Beatles tribute album. I was surprised by how few decent Beatles covers I had in my collection (showing, I suppose, that they either never quite established the same hipness cache among the artists I tend to collect, or some of their material is just too revered for artists to risk putting their own imprint upon). I ended up having to borrow that god-awful "I Am Sam" soundtrack to fill this out a bit. I don't think this one is nearly as interesting as the first three tributes I assembled, but it's still got a decent amount of variety and entertainment value.
Feedback:
I think your reasons for the lack of great Beatles covers are right on, but this still looks pretty good.
yeah I also think you're right about why there's so few good beatles covers around, I think Mojo did a great home tape a few years back "sounds like beatles" if there's anyone remeber that one
I'm with the other 2 kids here;-) Uncut did 1 Beatles-tribute & 1 John Lennon....I think your mix looks MUCH more intres'ting, are you going to put a Dylan-tribute out on AOTM?? :-)
Looks great. It seems like fewer bands are tackling Beatles covers these days. Perhaps it's because no one wants to give Michael Jackson any more money.
Good point, Ion. heh This looks pretty cool to *me*, Marc... you've included some of my favorites (the Jam's
And Your Bird", TFC, Alex, Harry, Echo & the Fall).
And Your Bird", TFC, Alex, Harry, Echo & the Fall).
great choices.
Ion may have a point, sad as the point is. Though i'd have to believe they're the "most covered band" in the history of recorded music...like the Grandaddy and Soft Boys picks.
Marc - back in 76 there was a movie called All This and World War II. All original B$W footage from the war - battles, Hitler taking happy hour on the terrace of his villa in Bavaria, Churchill making a speech, etc. But no speaking at all. the entire sound track was Beatle covers that were supposed to be appropriate for the moment on film (Hitler gets The Fool on The Hill). I had the two album set. Great covers, mostly. Its been lost long ago, but I recall Status Quo doing Getting Better, Aerosmith doing Come Together, Leo Sayer doing a nice one, maybe Stawberry Fields. Probably out of print for decades. Too bad.
Oops, missed this one. Wonder how many times "Tell Me Why" has been covered? Bet the Brinsley Schwarz version rocks.
