Thelonious Monk
Comment:
Working within different contexts (quartets, solo, the occasional big-band date), Monk demonstrated his music’s ability to adapt. Often revisiting favorite numbers, he always brought something new and surprising — in fact, we’re not sure if we’ve ever heard a bad Monk performance. Here, there’s plenty of room to immerse yourself in his super-sized talent: “Liza (All the Clouds’ll Roll Away”) from his second Riverside album, The Unique Thelonious Monk (1956), is a delightful Gershwin cover, played at cannonball-express tempo and showcasing wonderful interplay between the pianist and drummer Art Blakey; “Nutty” finds Monk in outstanding form alongside John Coltrane.
