Comment:

this mix is a combination of things. it's inspired by two movies i've just seen recently. the first was downtown 81, a wonderful look into the art and music scene of new york in 1981 with basquiat in the lead role, and the music that drove that movie. which was wonderful. it included DNA, Tuxedomoon, The Plastics, and James White & The Blacks among others. and secondly by 24 hour party people which was about factory records with bands like Joy Division, New Order, The Happy Mondays, and A Certain Ratio. Joy Division has been a growing favorite of mine for sometime now and their singer Ian Curtis has always intrigued me. Before the movie all I knew was that he hung himself and that he was incredible. From there it took off. This mix is partly amazing music from the post-punk, new wave, no wave, etc. eras, and part Ian Curtis tribute. At the Brian Eno & J Peter Schwalm the mood changes to a somber feel. The following tracks are either incredibly deppressing or tragicly beautiful, similar to Curtis himself. Also encompassed in those tracks are Nick Drake and Jeff Buckley songs who were both also taken before their time (well the Buckley track is actually originaly a Leonard Coehn song, but it's feel of tragic beauty is hard to match.) The Mix Begins with a Joy Division Track and ends with one aswell. This mix equally makes me want to cry and embrace life at the same time. And that's how I would like to view Ian Curtis.

The Joy Division part was probably the most enjoyable part of the movie. It's good overall though. It's done in an interesting way.

well... I just commented on another one of your mixes about James Chance and here he is again along with a reference to James White. Great. I would love to see the movie you're talking about - downtown 81. I'll have to look it up. I saw a lot of those bands in NYC clubs during the early 80's.

I would have loved to those guys. James White and The Blacks was a definite highlight of Downtown 81. He just has that raw energy soul.
