Comment:

In anticipation of 'In Time: The Best of R.E.M. 1988-2003' which is due in October I've come up with my own suggestion for the selection. I've included 'Bad Day' and 'Animal', the two new songs R.E.M. have announced for inclusion on the collection; I've heard them both live (twice) and they have a very 80s-era feel to them. I guess it's kind of unlikely that they'll go with many of the tracks I've picked here on the final version, but these are my favourites from the last 15 years - especially Country Feedback, my favourite R.E.M. song of all time.

Why does the new collection only include the post 88 stuff? Was there a problem with IRS records? I ask b/c the pre-88 stuff (in my mind) dwarfs anything after.

In response to Sean, I guess it's because of the collection being on Warner. I wanted to stick with the format of the best of collection when I made the mix, but I agree that the pre-88 R.E.M. is excellent, though I slightly prefer the (albeit inconsistent) 90s material.

Like many REM fans from the IRS era, I tend to think of the post-'88 output as the "increasing mediocrity" era. Yes, some fine songs (many of which you've included, though I'm partial to "Man on the Moon" and "Electrolite"), but they really lost the spark of genius that permeated everything through Document. And Up and Reveal really verged on horrible (or at least very, very dull).
