Comment:
Everything that matters from a criminally underappreciated band. In their '80's heyday, they mixed a jazzy, Euro-janglepop sound (maybe akin to the Smiths or the Housemartins) with humorous, whimsical lyrics (i.e. a less twisted Robyn Hitchcock) to come up with some great, memorable tunes. The swirling pop ditty "Southern Mark Smith" was one of those songs I heard once and still can't get out of my head 20 years later. They also wrote the most original (ok, the only) ode to neutered pets ("Domestic Animal"); a terrific dig on fratboys & rednecks ("Real Men"); and a twisted faux hip-hop number (a la Blondie's "Rapture") that will make you think twice about eating chicken ("The Best Way"). In the '90's their sound became more straightforward powerpop/rock, and they lost some of their originality, but they still arrived at the occasional winner ("Mister Odd," "Ghosts").
Feedback:
Ooh, hey, I'm interested in this. I've always been kind of partial to the "Groovin' in the Bus Lane" track, as well...
I ended up cutting "Groovin'" (in what literally would qualify as the Conroy-styled "last song cut." Actually based on a problem extracting it from a cdr. (Some of this is vinyl-sourced.)
Looks fabulous Marc. These guys were great and very amusing, and I regret missing the chance to see them live (even though I had free tickets!). I think I have most of these songs on cassette and vinyl, but I'd love to have them compiled on CD. Trade?
Wait a second, why didn't I ask for this? Is there anything else you'd like of mine?
