Comment:
So, did Link Wray invent the power chord? Did he invent riff rock? Did he invent heavy metal? The very notion that people ask these questions is testament to Link's place in rock history. Maybe he only wrote 4 songs - but they were 4 great goddamned songs! This mix has been a few months in the making, as I saw Link back in the spring. There were elements of it that made it one of the best shows I'd ever seen, and one of the worst. It was louder than God, but that's not a bad thing. Link seemed to end every song with the Rumble riff - not necessarily a bad thing either. And Link was clearly having a good time. Ah well, maybe it was his freaked-out wife on stage with him giving the stare-down to anyone with a camera. At any rate, this here's some of my fave Link tunes and a handful of great Link knock-offs or Link-influenced tunes. Long live Link! Title nicked from the "Think Link" tribute 10" discs that the Cowslingers put out a few years back. Nice guys, those 'slingers. (Thanks to Brad for "Julie Baby". Volume 3 in the "Guitar Snob Guidebook" series, but who's counting? And you sure don't have to be a snob to appreciate Link Wray.)Feedback:
Awesome! Link is the master of sustain, No one can squeeze as much out of one chord as him. have you heard the Man or Astroman version of Deuces Wild ? His live shows ,nowadays , are...unusual.I saw him in Toronto a couple of years ago and his wife was onstage combing out his pompadour / mullet while he played...wierd.
Great stuff, Sean...Besides the beautiful, sweeping powerchords, ya gotta love the bizarre cover photos (back and front) on the ROBERT GORDON WITH LINK WRAY album which was released in the mid-80s...Classic.
Fabulous SEAN! I love Link Wray! He's one of the coolest guys around I think, ask Neil Young and Bob Dylan...they LOVE him! Some of his earliest recordings are harder and rawer than anything in the rock history! Pete Townshend and Jimi Hendrix listened a lot to this guy in the mid 60s I think! Great work once again;)
Hey Grease, I'd forgotten all about that MoA cover. I'm going to add it now. Thanks!
Fantastic stuff my friend. Wray to go!
ate five candy bars and was breakin' all day - got home and saw a link wray mix - whoa! this is more like hula hoop music sean!
I agree with everyone. Kick-ass.

...the full-on sounds of the "throaty roar of power!" E = LW2 It counts even if no one's countin'.

Great mix and wonderful collection of Link influences. Wore out a best of Link Wray album sometime in the 70s. Love the Robert Gordon/Link Wray albums of the 80s too. Saw the Cowslingers this summer - awesome.
I saw him on this last tour, also - yeah, his wife really is a presence on stage - but it was a chance to see the man himself play those awesome tunes. by the way, did you see the recent tribute album to him on MuSick records? called "guitar ace", has some really good renditions of his songs. definitely recommended!
that billy joel and james taylor are in the rock 'n' roll hall of fame and link wray isn't says all you need to know about the ludicrousness of that enterprise. but the linkster is his own hall of fame. this mix is lowdown.
Ha. Right on, Eric. This looks nice, Seanald.
Wonderful.
Link is King. Rockin' Mix, Sean!
Yum, yum, yum! I wanna hear this one very loud.
ahhh man, have you ever heard the Link Wray album that came out in 71, it was self titled, on polydor records? the most amazing record, i have ever heard.
