Comment:

My brother asked me to make an 'intro to soul men' tape for his rhythm-challenged girlfriend (a Brit, what can you do?). This was back when I was deep in my Atlantic/Stax phase, before my soul collecting became less catholic and my brother moved on to an even less-funky girlfriend (big Neil Diamond fan, what can you do?). I think this stands up as a solid if somewhat obvious primer, though today I'd only allow one cut per artist to make room for Curtis Mayfield (how'd I miss him?), James Carr, Swamp Dogg, Ike Turner, Andre Williams, Little Willie John, Arthur Conley, Howard Tate, General Johnson, Gene Chandler, Arthur Alexander, Garnett Mimms, Charles Wright, Jimmy Castor, Lou Rawls and many more.
