Eric Clapton
Comment:
Pretty much everybody wants to play with Clapton, and some of his peak moments have come in the company of pop music’s brightest stars. Forty years after joining forces in the supergroup Blind Faith, he reunited with Steve Winwood for a series of sold-out dates at Madison Square Garden, sending up sparks in a leather-jacket-tough reworking of “Tell the Truth.” In a duet version of Little Walter’s “Mean Old World,” cut during the sessions for Derek & The Dominos’ Layla, Duane Allman and Eric prove that you can amp-up the voltage without bringing in the band. And when it comes to the blues, they just don’t make ’em better than B.B. King, who stands neck to neck with Clapton, trading licks — and vocals — in a mojo-grindin’ workout on “Rock Me Baby.”
