Comment:

Talk about frustrating... single-artist mixes don't get more difficult than this. There is *so* much I'd like to change about this track listing, but I don't think that I can in good conscience. Suffice it to say that this is *not* a representative Miles comp, but it does put a lot of my favorite tracks in one place. I really, really wish that his later "voodoo" work did not consist of such immensely epic pieces, as I absolutely love it but could not justify cutting some of the earlier things here in favor of it. The only things here that I would potentially shelve in favor of other things are "'Round Midnight" and "Saeta", and getting rid of those *still* does not give me room for tracks like "Paraphernalia", "Right Off", "Pharaoh's Dance", "Moja, Pt. 1", "Miles Runs the Voodoo Down", "On the Corner", etc. Two shorter tunes that I *did* cut, however, to include more stylistic variation are "Gingerbread Boy" (which would be here if eliminating "'Round Midnight" left enough room for it) and "John McLaughlin" (which was cut at the last minute because Miles doesn't actually play on it). Oh well. I'm interested in what my fellow mixers have to say in the way of suggestions. Keep in mind that there will obviously be more volumes in the Miles series.

Yeah, I can sympathize with your dilemmas...a difficult task and one I wouldn't even want to attempt.I'm with MPS with regard to favourite periods.I guess the thing about Miles is that he was really 'a number of artists' at different times of his career. And so, perhaps your single artist mixes should concentrate on the best of each personality rather than trying encompass the whole. However, I know this goes against your general MO for such mixes.Anyway, absolutely nothing wrong with what's on this volume :~) I await it companions...

what Gary and Mike say. Great stuff. A difficult concept, well executed.

This is probably my favorite Miles period. The later, funkier stuff was really good too, but I'm more of a beatnik type.

super picks all around. he's certainly not the one-volume mix type.

What they said. Difficult task. I certainly couldn't do it. But this is well done.

Another artist that can't be fully understood until digesting every single note. No argument about the picks here, but my fave period is the 70s electro-fuzz.

No shame in these picks Rob. It's always difficult to do a "representative" single artist mix. Particularly for an artist who's career spans over 50 years. Particularly when that 50 year career contains at least 5 stylistically distinct periods which could be considered careers unto themselves. Maybe Gary's seperate but equal idear is the way to go. In any event, you've picked lots of great sides from an artist who has more than lots of great sides. P. S. Don't forget the Charlie Parker years ;-)
