Comment:

Compendium of and companion to the best live shows I've seen this year, in order of appearance, occasionally with support acts thrown in (LSF, Lucinda Williams). After a piss poor pool from which to choose for 2002, 2003 has presented an embarrassment of riches in and around Boston. Top 5: 5) Macy Gray at the Paradise. Her eccentricities have relegated her to smaller clubs, and she's all the better for it. 4) New Pornographers/ Broken Social Scene (tie): not the same gig, but back to back nights, and a similar exuberance and pure joy held between them.
3) Neil Young and his gonzo rock opera/concept album/"musical novel" Greendale. The best and craziest fuck you I've ever seen an artist deliver to his hardcore fans. I probably would've been pissed too if I paid over 90 bucks for my seat, but I was on the lawn and only paid 35 and loved every minute of it. So positively insane that it transcended its inherent pretension and cheesiness to become something oddly sublime. 2) Deftones at Axis. So much brutality in such a confined space. Without a doubt the most bonejarringly loud and full on show I've ever seen by anyone (and that includes AC/DC) I'm still recovering over 4 months later.
1) Bjork. Severe bias here, and I didn't think she'd be able to surpass her 2001 tour, but Bjork is nothing if not a genius at topping herself in everything she does. A remarkable bait and switch, what started off as a mellow evening of cold introspection became a full blown techno damaged rave up in its back half.

Omitted for obvious reasons: The Trachtenburg Slideshow Family Players. Without the A/V accompaniment, it loses all its punch. But definitely one of the oddest and craziest groups to emerge in a long time.

Any mix which conatins both Interpol and Radiohead is OK in my book. Good choice on the Electric Six, too.

This looks fantastic - you obviously had a good year!

The Interpol, BSS, YYYs, Deftones and McLusky choices are all great.
