Comment:

A long-overdue nod to a strange and relatively unknown relic of the late '60's, a band probably better remembered for their unusual backstory than their not-necessarily-essential psychedelic folk-pop. The band started as 3 or 4 teenagers in a garage band who hooked up with a much older (ok, 30) rich lawyer, Bob Markley, who saw them as a great way to meet (underage) girls. He funded the band and wrote most of their lyrics. Their first, self-produced album was a lo-fi run through a mix of British Invasion and Dylan-influenced tunes; it's pretty forgettable, and I've largely ignored it here. They then released a trio of interesting albums on which their (limited) reputation is based. Musically, they were a mix of the Byrds, Love, Airplane, Cream, and some Zappa-esque weirdness (they released a Zappa cover as an early single). Lyrically, Markley started out with basic Summer of Love peace & love poetry, though over the course of these three albums (as the music also became more adventurous) he worked up some silly (but somehow amusing) anti-war, anti-capitalism rants. They closed out their brief run with 2 long-out-of-print albums (I relied on some vinyl ---> cdr conversions for this mix) where the music lost much of its psychedelic edge, sounding far more like early-70's mellow soft rock, and Markley's growing obsession with very young girls crept into more and more of his lyrics. The latter albums are, as a result, both mediocre and very, very creepy, but still had their moments. Markley apparently ended up in some trouble with the police as a result of his sexual proclivities, and supposedly was ultimately institutionalized. You can read all about them here.

HOLY SMOKE! One of my absolute favorite bands from the era!!! I have thinkin some weeks about doing a mix with west coast myself! This looks incredible......I love most of their Reprise-recordings....fantastic mixture of Psych-Sunshine-Pop-Rock etc, etc......One of the best groups ever if you ask me=).....Cool of you to include High coin, a love instrumental!Fantastic guitarwork. My favorites here are Smell of incense, Shifting sands, Transparent day, Here's where you belong, a child of a few hours.... The only track I miss here is Buddah, BTW Shifting sands has the most incredible psychedelic guitars I ever heard......FANTASTIC work!

I would really like to hear this. They never really hit me at first listen, so I never gave them much of a chance. Let me know if you need anything of mine.

COOL! Great mix for a great group. I recently picked up a 10" tribute album to them with some great stuff on it. I especially like High Coin.

Certainly a band in need of a best of comp. So many crap tracks 'tween the real gems. Have you ever heard Michael Lloyd's first LP, The Smoke? Pretty amazing stuff for a nineteen year old.

Yeah, they always had the greatest song titles. Favorite track from here is A Child Of A Few Hours...

This looks truly exceptional Marc. You picked most of my favorites from the two CDs I have by them. I would be so honored if you hooked me up with a copy somewhere in time.

Sean, Ion -- more than happy to trade. I'll drop you a line.

Lo-Fi: I have the Smoke on cdr; tried to include a track here, but ended up cutting it for space.

Another band I know on paper through years of reading too many music magazines and books without actually having heard them. Based on the raves of a few people here that I respect I'm sure that this is a fine disc and a band I need to check out. Even if I didn't know anything about them before seeing your mix, your description would have made damn curious enough to act and find something by them.
