Comment:
I wrote a little story to go along with this mix:An imaginary crush is a boy or girl, whichever is your preference, who is intelligent, smart, funny, sweet, sensitive, cute, and-- the most crucial-- has fabulous taste in music. He/she would of course appreciate your equally fab taste in music. You might meet at a show or your favorite record store. You might be in Wax Trax one day, browsing through the "B" section, looking for that new Belle & Sebastian EP or Bonnie Prince Billy album , when you notice him/her over in the "M" section checking out releases from Mirah and the Microphones. He/she might glance over, and noticing your excellent picks, strike up a conversation. And it begins, the two of you meet everyday after school to talk about your favorite bands, and maybe browse the pages of the latest Magnet or CMJ. You'd make mixtapes/CDs for each other, choosing various themes, each of you scanning your vast library of musical knowledge to create the perfect tape. The mixtape is, after all, an art form. He/she wouldn't make fun of you for your almost obsessive love of Elliott Smith, and might even introduce you to a few great bands of which you've never heard. Your imaginary crush would go with you to all the best shows, and wouldn't mind arriving extra early just to be the first in the door. Or waiting in line at the merchandise table afterwards. Now of course everything is so perfect and wonderful that another wonderful boy/girl would never come between you, not even one with "hipster" clothes and funny glasses. If things went really well you might even go on to get married and have a family. Of course you would pass on your love of great music to your offspring, ensuring that the imaginary crush scenario can be repeated. However, since there does not exist such a perfect boy/girl for you... you'll just have to be satisfied with this mixtape. (january 2001)
Feedback:
great idea, and so true! it's nearly impossible to find someone with great musical taste that wouldn't mind my crazed dabbling in '50s soul, bluegrass and salsa...sigh!
I know very little of your mix but your comments moved me...and all because of a mixed tape.
that story's so cute and makes me sad at the same time. i don't know any of those songs but nevertheless, it seems like it'd be a great mix just from the song titles!
Love your story.;) Alas, I have been in such a realtionship, which didn't last.:( And it wasn't because of my obsessive love for Robyn Hitchcock either.:)Anyway, lovely mix. Especially Lucksmiths and Kleenex Girl Wonder.
!! i so admire your taste.
that's a great mix. would you like to arrange a trade?
wow!! excellent all around!
My imaginary boyfriend and I sing along to that Beulah song at top volume, like, every night. Also, my imaginary boyfriend sounds exactly like Hefner. Yes. Yes he does. I sure can't wait to meet him.
(if you are trading, i would like to trade too...)
I've been waiting for a boy like that. LOL I just picture meeting @ a show and starting to talk about music because of the lyrics on my pants or something... I don't know most of those bands, but Built to Spill is wonderful... and the Eyeliners are a local band for me. My god, my scene sucks...
Looks great too. Hope you have some more mixes left in you after 9/13. Don't feel you have to post all your mixes at once!
