Comment:

a quick break from the fuzzy glitch to toss together what (I think) sounds best with Mr. Jones' latest; Can an old codger still craft a decent pop diddy?; I think the answer's a resounding "yes!" (ahhh, the old familiar adrenalin rush of a new bowie album finally returns)

A step forward from Heathen (which wasn't a bad showing from our aging rocker); and, I think an attempt to re-present some of the material from the disappointing (and ironically titled) "Never Let Me Down" disc. I listened to an interview where Bowie was very disheartened by that CD's lackluster sales & airplay (which led to his contractural split with Virgin); he kept saying that the songs were very good & I think he had several in mind when he penned this obviously New York state of mind (Ludlow & Grand, south along the Hudson, up on Riverside) album. The difference? Visconti. Tony has (again) earned his paycheck with his "...buried, exultant background vocals, random discordant touches [& twangs] and vibrant, layered arrangements." --from David Bowie returns to Earth

Other than that, the return of Slick's guitar (bowie furiously strumming acoustic behind Earl & David Torn) was a welcome treat & bowie's use of the stylophone is flawless...and somebody's playing a wicked harmonica on
"She'll Drive the BIG Car" which is one of his best (and danciest) tunes since the blue eyed soul Young Americans days ( `She'll turn the radio way up high, and find a station playing SAD SAD SOUL').the very busy chorus just melts me.
Didn't care as much for the covers this time `round (couldn't compare to Heathen's Cactus IMHO); but this makes 2 rather successful offerings in a row from Visconti/Jones.keep it up boys.

Just picked this up today, really like it after initial listens. Good songs, very "Bowie" without being retreads. I actually enjoyed the covers, but then I'm always kind of interested in the songs Mr. B chooses to cover (loved Cactus on Heathen). Nice write up in last Sundays NY Times too. Recommended!

Also wanted to mention that there's a UK reissue of Black Tie White Noise which includes a 2nd full CD of bonus tracks (remixes etc.) and a DVD (PAL) of interviews and performances relating to BTWN. Enjoyable if you're a fan of Mr. B.

Always find Bowie inspiring, I like seeing someone growing older and still being vital and creative. Gives me hope!

Woah, do a little research? Sounds like a goodie, gonna have to snag this one too. The stuff he's been putting out since 'Outside' has been quite good, IMHO.

...never was a huge fan of Outside (a bit too weird for me); though I did almost place (I have not been to) Oxford Town somewhere here, but opted for Day-In, Day-Out.

"Day In, Day Out" kicks an ass..! I surmise the rest of this does as well...., I like the Thin White Duke showing some swagger and bravado....

Hi gab. only have one Bowie post 70's recording, but the reviews made me want to look into heathen. I forgot about it until now. Have you ever heard his 1966 tunes Take My Tip and I Pity the Fool? One band was Davy Jones and the Mannish Boys, and the other was him with some other dudes. Fantastic stuff. The first R&B, the second more just B. I keep meaning to put them on a mix. Yours really is a cassette and not a CD, eh?

saw your link on bowieaudio, seems like this arrangement would work, especially the blur (I might have squeezed in a Radiohead track) but I cannot understand why he included Big Car-do not like that song at all--filler IMHO.
