Comment:
I've been wanting to do this for the longest time and a request from lo-fi (coupled with some CDRs from my friend Rich) finally got me off my ass to do it. Sorry for the lame title (I always pick a lyric), but I don't know much French. So many tracks were cut that a volume two will *definitely* be forthcoming. The most regrettable thing is that the last track cut ("Nazi Rock") was the only tune that I'd picked from his sickeningly hilarious Rock Around the Bunker concept album from 1975.Feedback:
Excellent.
One of my all time favorite artists. I love to play Je T'Aime...Moi Non Plus at dinner parties and watch my guests squirm.
Oui Oui!Looks fabulous Mr. Conroy. When we trade again in 2005, be sure to include it!
Er, but shouldn't this be "pervert" (as in kinky) in the title instead of "PrTvert" (the poet)? ;)
Yeah, nice work....I esp love Les sucettes, Ford mustang & Bonnie clyde..........
I have no clue what the hell is even is, but based on your track record I'm intrigued.
Oops... ah, yeah. Sorry, Thomas. Can anyone help me with the French gender of "pervert", then?
Cool. Save me a copy of the series - much I'd like to hear.
LOVE this! I used to work with a guy from France who would bring in tapes from his very cheesiest disco period. Lots of fun! I'd love to hear this one (and the next volume) someday!
Du tout bon Gainsbourg. Love this
Gainsbourg, oui, formidable - Re: Rock Around The Bunker - Gainsbourg,Russian Jew - forced to wear yellow star during Nazi Occupation of France - as all Jews know we like to self-deprecate and mock the holocaust so we know who the Nazis are. I think Rock Around The Bunker is personally his worst work, although it has a certain ironic charm and was, at the time, considered quite shocking. Gainsbourg was a Pop Genius and a great lyricist. My favourite track by Serge is Je suis venu te dire....which you so rightly included and demonstrates Gainsbourg's ability to write achingly beautiful melodies and wonderful words. A great job. Every house should have at least one Gainsbourg Album.
I would love to hear this one, Rob. I only know the "Naughty" song!
tres formidable, rob. guess you had to save my fave goofy serge track, 'comic strip', for vol. 2. isn't 'melody nelson' an awesome record?
Rob. When we trade this is among the many things I need.
Thanks, everyone. Yeah, "Comic Strip" was one of the Last Tracks Cut (TM) and will most definitely be on Vol. II. And Melody Nelson *is* great... two other LTCs were "Ah, Melody" and "L'Hotel Peculier." Rock Around the Bunker *is* probably one of his least rewarding albums, as Dom noted, but the sheer insouciance of its concept makes it kind of essential in its own right.
Spectacular Rob.
Hello, Doctor Jekyll! So much good stuff to choose from M. Gainsbourg's repertoire. I've got a good bit, but much of this is new to me. Greaseball's comment reminds me a recent Arf! Arf! release I saw a few weeks back.
Looks good Rob, I have been looking for a good overview of Mr. Gainsbourg and I think you may have do the trick.
This, along with volume 2, is perfect! I was about to compile a Serge mix, but this is overwhelmingly good, and I'd surely fall short of this one. Please let me know if I could get a copy.
jane birkin should not be allowed to express herself in french. nonetheless, soixante neuf is marvelous.
