Comment:
For my supernifty pal Cindy on her 24th birthday. Compiled on cassette (after dubbing two 45-minute CDs for "sides") by request, as she only has a cassette player in her car. I'll be giving her copies of the two CDs, however, so she can play them at home in a higher-fidelity situation. There aren't a tremendous amount of obscurities on the mix, so she'll probably know most of them, but I'm pretty proud of the result as a great set of tunes on its own merits. "You're Gonna Miss Me" leads off the whole thing due to a High Fidelity conversation that we had on Saturday night and John Darnielle wraps everything up with her favorite song of his. Title from the Red Krayola track (which was covered by Galaxie 500, one of her favorite groups).Feedback:
only good stuff here
nice picks. love the monkees, holly g, husker (that's your fave track of theirs, isn't it?), sally (i LOVE that tune), roy harper.... boss, man.
What P said! Fantastic opening track! I esp enjoy Eddie Bo, 13th floor, Junior Murvin, Spacemen 3 &, &, & :)
oh this is just too fantastic!!
Great mix, but how could you not include "Taste of Cindy" by Jesus & Mary Chain? ;) Seriously, you have a nice eclectic mix here, and until we hear from her, I'm going to assume she'll love it.
great pix, Rob. Especially the Robert Wyatt, Elevators and Junior Murvin cutz. Fred Neil and James Carr tunes wrap up side two nicely
this looks excellent. a tape i might be able to make in like ten years when i know more about music :) i saw holly golightly last night, i loved her!
Nice, nice, nice. I love many of these tracks.
Yeah, it's pretty damn cool. It doesn't get much better than the Huskers and Carr picks. And Junior Murvin. And the Mountain Goats. You get the idea. Great stuff.
I realize most people give Bob Mould most of the credit for Husker Du, but "Books About UFO's" (coupled with "Terms Of Psychic Warfare") makes a good case for Grant Hart as a punk-pop deity. And the YMG tracks is an old fave (please don't spread it around, but I think Hole's cover nearly redeems Courtney Love for her multiple transgressions, both artistic and personal).
gotta love Sister Anne. You know she can.
Interesting. i might have to compile a mix for someone's 24th birthday soon myself. except replace 24th birthday with "being so damned cute"
"Aguistus"? My god, I'm slipping in my old age.
looks good, love that scott walker tune
Thanks, everyone. You know, I was *this* close to including "Taste of Cindy", then I thought that'd be somewhat... uh... *inappropriate*, since Jen exists and all. heh To be honest, I was even closer to including the Faces' "Cindy Incidentally", but I couldn't find my CDR of Ooh La La.
By the way, Marc, I *much* prefer Grant Hart (who is an absolute god to me) to Bob Mould (whose post-Huskers work is embarrassing and who stopped writing decent songs--with a couple of exceptions--after Flip Your Wig). I love Bob's guitar work with the Huskers, but as a vocalist and songwriter he's waaaayyyy inferior to Grant. (See my "Bluer than the bluest heaven" Grant mix and "No more rope and too much dope" Huskers mix for further proof of this.)
Great stuff, gotta love that scott walker song!
a nice one...and tapelicious. a nice change!
