Comment:
Updated an old mix to add a few tunes from the new album -- which, sad to say, is pretty much as abysmal and horrifying as the nearly unanimous reviews have warned. But, hey, she wants to try to sell out by churning out overproduced, faceless pap, that's her biz, and it doesn't change the fact that she's got a helluva legacy. Unlike some early fans of the classic Exile in Guyville, I find both Whip-Smart and (most of) Whitechocolatespaceegg to be underrated, and she's had some decent b-sides over the years as well. (Plus, for what it's worth, the new "Internet only" EP available if you buy the crappy new album is actually far better than said album, so maybe there's still hope for her.)
Feedback:
Hmm. Liz. You know that Greil Marcus/Robert Christgau (I can never remember which one wrote this) quote about Rod Stewart ("Never has anyone betrayed his talent so completely")... well, that pretty much applies to Liz as far as I'm concerned, albeit with a gender switch. My Liz mix would be Exile in Guyville plus "May Queen", most likely. Do you happen to have the Girlysound stuff? I've never gotten a copy of that...
Rob -- I have the "Complete Girlysound" boot. The discs have a fair amount of tape hiss and some digital nits, but I think that's part of the master. Glad to dupe you a set if you'd like.
Is the new album at leats good pap? I mean, can she still write good hooks? I heard the single and was pretty disappointed (the lyrics were awful), but there was a hook buried in there. Ah well, to paraphrase John Lennon, at least you've got the old records. Good for her - I hope she makes a buck or two, if that's what she really wants.
nice mix you have here. i made a similar liz phair tribute a while back, but you seem to have some more of her obscure work. did songs like "it's sweet' and "jeremy engle" come from the girly sounds bootleg or from other recordings (soundtrack/etc..)?
Can never say anything bad about a Liz Phair mix. I haven't heard anything from the new album, even though I'm somewhat of a Liz Phair completeist. The negative reviews have prevented me from plunking down 16 bucks for the new record. Is she trying to be Britney Spears for the older set know? And like Sean said, every album she does from now can be complete crap, but I'll always love her first three (as well as the unreleased demo stuff, b-sides and soundtrack stuff)
Just to respond to the questions: "Jeremy Engle" and "Hurricane Cindy" come from the new Internet-only ep you can download if you get the new cd; the last 3 tracks are from the new self-titled album. And, yes, it really is that bad. Though the songs do have hooks, as Sean observed, they're not HER hooks. There are plenty of crappy songs that come on the radio that I don't turn off because they're catchy, but would never dream of going out to buy the album because as soon as the song is over I've forgotten it -- that's how I'd describe her new music.
this is another question, i have the new liz phair album, and was able to access the ep files, but i wasnt able to download them(it's just streaming the files - regardless of which action I choose, or if I save file as), perhaps we could arrange a trade for it? or, i could copy a cd I have that you may be interested in.
