Comment:

I tried my hardest...
I just couldn't come up with an opening track to top "Guitar Town." I tried "Harlan Man," "The Week of Living Dangerously" and others. Nope. "Guitar Town" still sounds like the single moment when Steve Earle sets out his stall: This is his kind of music, the way he will play for the remainder of his career.
Others have made Steve Earle mixes and posted them on Art of the Mix.
Starpush has one called "Hardcore Troubadour" that looks excellent. I can only follow in his footsteps while agreeing with the assessment that Steve Earle is a songwriter of rare quality.
I was going to end this mix with "My Old Friend the Blues." Then I thought: That song reverberates with finality and loss. "When I Fall" is much more redemptive... like the life of Steve Earle!

Great stuff. I just love Steve. And I agree, it would be tough not to open with "Guitar Town". This is one it would be tough to limit to 80 minutes, I think.

Steve Earle - great songwriter, great performer, great humanitarian.... lousy husband, from what I hear. Great mix, and cool live tunes. I could easily see another volume or two here. Truthfully, most of his albums are solid through and through.

Great mix. I just saw him again live very recently and he ended his third encore with a string of great covers... Time Has Come Today, Get Together and What's So Funny ('bout Peace, Love and Understanding). Awesome show. Looking forward to his new live album.
