Comment:

Gillian is lukewarm about Elliott Smith, not having heard much of him, but having associated him with those people who bought his albuim just because his song was in Good Will Hunting (just like the people, she says, who bought the Del Amtri album just because their song was on the "Party of Five" TV show). Well, since Elliott Smith is the artist I've probably listened to most in the last few years, ever since buying his albums back in 2000 and collecting an absurd amount of rarities since then. So I made a mix that's not really a best of, not an anthology (not chronological), nor an Elliott Smith starter... having listened to him for so long, I had trouble trying to hear these songs as if for the first time. I pretty much tried to make a mix like any other out of one artist's collection. I hope it's something she appreciates... or at least listens to. That's the risk you take when you make a mix for someone by an artists they have specifically NOT expressed interest in.

In my defense, I worked in a record store when "Party of Five" was popular, and those Del Amitri purchasers did annoy me. The example I actually used, however, was people who bought The Rembrandts album after they found out The Rembrandts did the theme song for Friends. I guess you could not bring yourself to compare Elliott Smith to The Rembrandts. And I have not listened to this mix yet. I will, though. Sigh.
